Stress is a part of everyones lives but firefighters have their own special flavors of intensity to deal with. From the ever looming lady in the ceiling, to annual testing, managing personalities in the stations, and every variety of call in-between. Stress is a part of the service and expecting it to go away isn’t realistic but, we can make some simple adjustments to our normal operations to give us the edge over chronic stress.

Chris and Angie sit down and share their journeys, successes and failures in navigating stress and regulation. You’ll hear stories, techniques, tips, and get direction on how you can manage your stress response, down regulate when needed, and keep a mindful eye on when stress is building to a tipping point.

There continues to be no immediate plans for more Tailboard episodes, but Beyond the Headlines on @firefighternationhq is still running.

I’ll be in Indy at FDIC in a few weeks running some panels, a few interviews, giving out stickers, and doing on the spot hot takes that I’ll compile into an episode.

Downgrade the Response: First Responder Stress Management

I’ll be joining Chris Marella and Angie Bishop on Firefighter Nation this July 21st to talk about stress, resilience, and tools that actually help first responders recover—mentally and physically.

You’ve probably seen posts like:
“Do THIS to stimulate your vagus nerve!”
But… what does that even mean?
And more importantly—what does the vagus nerve actually do?

Let’s break it down.
The vagus nerve might be the most important nerve you’ve never heard of.
It helps regulate your heart rate, digestion, mood, and plays a central role in how your body recovers from stress, trauma, and injury.

🧠 Here’s one teaser:
Your breath is the remote control for your nervous system.
And the real key?
It’s all in the exhale.
…but only if your technique is right. Otherwise, you’re just spinning your wheels.

The Chicago Fire Department made some major policy changes last month.

It’s risky to judge or make assumptions about an organization so large and complex.

Since the episode published they made some adjustments but this is part of our initial reaction to the policy update.

Raise your hand if this sounds familiar….yeah, me either 😂
You can only white-knuckle it for so long. Years of trauma, sleep deprivation, cortisol dumps, and pretending you’re fine — that’s not strength, that’s survival mode.

Operator Syndrome is gutting firefighters from the inside out, and no one’s talking about it. We’re burning out our best and calling it ‘just part of the job.’

It’s not sustainable. And it sure as hell isn’t weakness to admit it. It’s a physiological and psychological response to an extreme lifestyle. Awareness is the first step toward healing. Let’s talk about it.

Firefighters don’t run into burning buildings or go into horrific medical calls because we’re fearless or born with small amygdalas. We’re born with normal brains — and very real fear.
What sets us apart is what we do with that fear.
Through training and experience, we’ve learned to manage it, think clearly, and act with purpose in the chaos..with lots of dark humor, of course.
Courage isn’t the absence of fear — it’s the ability to manage and move through it. Don’t ever lose your humor. by @tailboardtalkspod

The firehouse won’t remember your stats or your shift count — but your family, your crew, your community will remember your presence. Leave your legacy with the people who carry your impact long after the tones stop dropping. That’s where it truly lives. by @tailboardtalkspod
