My mom kept my childhood dancing lion, who has a full head of beautiful mane she sew on along with little bells at the end. Last weekend, my son is holding on to it, a museum piece indeed. Thank you mom, even after all these years, it still looks so cool & magnificent! This was probably one of the very fashionable lions in the school:) by @tailiwu

This clay sculpture is called “The Warmth in Hands ” (手裡的溫度) by Taichung-based illustrator and sculptor Taili Wu @tailiwu , and resembles a Hakka-style glutinous rice dumpling called cao zai guo (草仔粿), which are typically stuffed with either a savory shredded radish filling or sweet red bean paste or sweet peanut powder. 🥟 Wu’s grandmother, who was a chef, made hers with the radish, dried tofu, and mushooms. But when Wu decided to make her own ceramic version for Issue 3 of Above the Fold, she filled hers with a recreation of a fond childhood memory—eating dumplings with her late grandmother.

“I was very lucky to have her in my life, immersed in her coooking,” the artist told Above the Fold @abovethefolddumplings . “She passed away two years ago, but her passion and love for food stays with us.”

Get a behind the scenes look on the making of “The Warmth in Hands,” and read an interview with Wu in this week’s newsletter, at the link in bio. ⬆️ You can also learn more about cao zai guo, and other Taiwanese rice-based filled dishes in Issue 3 of Above the Fold, available for purchase at at https://abovethefoldpress.com. by @tailiwu

Not long ago, I had a dream.
In the dream, I was a clockmaker of a tiny closet sized clock shop, where daily objects get turned into clocks. From croissant, apple, hat, car, guitar, pencil, to leopard. All clocks!

Have you ever wondered “who am I”? I don’t know, really, but isn’t it wonderful we get to find out ourselves.

Find & make your own ceramic clock with Taili:
