We often get asked why we specialise in breeds.

The truth is - animal welfare is not one-size-fits-all. Across Sri Lanka, there are many incredible organisations doing vital work in different areas. Not all of us need to do the same thing to make a difference. Sometimes, the most meaningful impact comes from recognising where the gaps are - and choosing to fill them.
This is ours.

As an organisation, we’ve never fully put into words why or how we do what we do. So, we’re going to start sharing that with you - piece by piece - beginning here.

Breed animals in Sri Lanka are often treated as commodities. They are bought to be shown off, or with the intention of making money through breeding. Very rarely are they acquired with a full understanding of the responsibility they require.

Sri Lanka lacks proper veterinary screening systems to identify genetic conditions in breeding animals. This means many puppies are born with underlying health issues - sold to families who have little to no awareness of what lies ahead.

There are also no strong regulations in place to prevent the exploitation, neglect, or irresponsible breeding of these animals.
Because these dogs are seen as “valuable,” they are often held onto - even as their health deteriorates. By the time they are surrendered, abandoned, or passed on, they are already critically ill. This is why so many of our rescues arrive in extremely poor condition, needing urgent and intensive care.

On top of this, many of the breeds brought into Sri Lanka are simply not suited to our climate or living conditions. Combined with unregulated and careless breeding practices, this results in animals that are genetically weaker and far more vulnerable to illness - unlike our resilient local Lankan Hounds, who are naturally adapted to survive here.

This is where we step in.
Not because these animals are more deserving - but because they are the ones we don’t see. They live invisible lives, suffering quietly behind closed doors, until they are discarded. And by then, it’s often too late.

Remember Miso? ❤️

She was abandoned from a tuk tuk and ran after it, trying to follow the people who had left her behind.

These days, life looks very different for Miso. 💚

She's found a wonderful home with Kalindi, goes on adventures, joins her for runs and is thoroughly enjoying life.

And the best part? Miso still rides in tuk tuks. Only now, she's going somewhere with someone who loves her and is bringing her home again.

Same little dog. A very different life. 🐾

Look at these happy faces! ❤️

Amelia and Blackie are both settling into their new homes, and we couldn't be happier for them! 🐾

Their rescue journeys have had the happy endings we hoped for, but there's still one little thing left to do — settle their outstanding hospital bills.

We'd love to close both accounts and put those expenses behind us as we continue caring for the animals who still need our help.

We kept the littlest of Hope’s puppies with their mama a little longer, even though they already had homes waiting🩵

Those extra weeks made such a difference! Evie the 2nd and Loki have caught up beautifully in weight and are doing so well.

Here they are getting a bath before their second round of vaccinations last weekend, with Mama Hope helping with the drying🥹❤️

And no, we did NOT bathe them with Vim! 😂 There’s a puppy shampoo bottle on the counter that’s a little harder to spot🙈

Sherry's story is about more than a lost leg 💔

Sherry came to us as an owner surrender with a severely wounded leg that was beyond saving. Once her blood levels improved enough, we were able to amputate it.

But losing her leg isn't the only challenge Sherry faces.

Some people seem to think having a large, powerful dog who is aggressive or difficult to control is something to be proud of.

It isn't a flex. It's a failure of responsibility.

Because what happens when that dog gets sick, injured or old? When they desperately need medical care but are too frightened or reactive to be safely handled?

Sherry is an unpredictable dog who even her previous owners struggled to manage. And when things became too difficult, they surrendered her.

Now imagine being Sherry.

Already injured and in pain, she's lost the only home she's known. She's surrounded by strangers who need to touch her, examine her and treat her, without any way of understanding that they're trying to help.

And because she struggles to trust and be handled, even helping her is harder than it should be.

We're doing everything we can to help Sherry recover, physically and behaviourally. But finding her a home one day will be another enormous challenge.

This is what happens when we fail dogs long before they ever become a problem.

Please, before bringing a dog home, think beyond their size, appearance or reputation. Think about the years ahead, the training and socialisation they'll need, and who will care for them when life gets difficult.

A dog's aggression is not a status symbol. And a dog becoming difficult to manage does not make them disposable.

Sherry has already lost a leg and a home. We don't want her to lose her chance at a good life too. 💚
