photography project: digital and pinhole photography; second year, first semester exhibition

tidal
The idea of motion and its supposed antithesis bring to me an idea of the order of how the world works around us, throughout us, and because of us. Motion is humbling. The human body can create its own motion in so many ways; the inertia of our existence can be boundless. It can punctuate fear and freedom. It is an involuntary perception of how we inhabit the world around us, and how the world moves despite us.
In creating a visual language to communicate this understanding of motion, I was drawn to the nature of pinhole photography, and its ability to capture motion of an environment; I say this and specifically refer to ghosting. There are two scenes which capture the stillness of human existence within a world of motion. In one scene, a figure becomes a steadfast reference point within an urban scape. There is ghosting seen in the way the traffic comes and goes in a tidal cycle.
The second scene showcases a figure surrounded by the motion of the natural world that we inhabit, unmoving as waves wash over and around, distorting with blur as the lense captures this dynamic. This was achieved using a DSLR camera, modified to function as a pinhole camera; creating a continuous visual language throughout the sequence.
Both scenes have an inherent commonality; there is stillness and introspection within any environment. Motion is motion. Our existence is definite, and that does not change as the world moves past us in a tide of traffic, or as the waves of the ocean crash around us. by @taine.studio
