🔈TW in the slides: r*pe/s*xual v*lence

I want to start by crediting Leila Baalbaki, whose poem “O Diplomacy, You will Not Extinguish Our Fire” inspired the first half of this essay title.

It took weeks to get this out into the world. The hefty weight of writing your truth drenched with rage and pain into existence isn’t talked about enough. Neither is the collective power of when we hold one another through the process of expressing an experience incredibly traumatic to tell. It is a kind of healing when that ember is lit then grows into a fire that no system or state can contain.

@seniwati.my along with dozens of brave artists put their bodies on the line to say enough is enough. No more will we accept the order of things and let things be. No more will we be silenced into shame. No more will we tame our rage.

Read the essay that tries to honor the communion and reclamation of autonomy that comes with tangible, real and loving solidarity (LINK IN BIO)

Chanting “Lawan Predator” and “Hidup Wanita”, supporters gathered at Dataran Merdeka on Sunday for Seniwati Solidarity’s first protest against sexual violence in the arts.

Despite the haze, the message is clear: survivors of all genders deserve to be heard, believed and supported.

The movement is calling for a publicly accessible sex offender registry, easier reporting procedures and stronger support for survivors. #SeniwatiSolidarity by @takaharasuiko

The “not all men” argument risks shifting attention away from sexual violence survivors and the wider culture that enables abuse,

Participants at the Seniwati Solidarity rally said Malaysia needed greater accountability, more open conversations about sexual harassment and stronger education on empathy and respect to challenge misogyny and ensure survivors were not left to face their experiences alone.

Seniwati Solidarity hopes to turn its first protest against sexual violence into a broader push for legal reforms and stronger support systems for survivors, including a publicly accessible sex offender registry and improved reporting procedures.

The movement’s spokesperson Takahara Suiko, 36, said the gathering at Dataran Merdeka on Sunday marked an initial step towards raising awareness about sexual violence in the arts industry and empowering survivors to seek help.

Real punk is about tearing down systems of abuse, not becoming the oppressor.

Somewhere along the way, people started confusing being "edgy" or "rebellious" with being toxic and sexually exploitative. Let’s clear it up: there is nothing subversive about harming people. True punk icons stood up for survivors, demanded active consent, and kept the community safe. That goes for all alt communities (we see you, goth girlies)

Let's look out for each other and keep the scene safe. Slide through to read why rape culture has absolutely zero place in our community. 💜
