The Vans Warped Tour is coming back to Montreal this weekend, for the first time in 12 years. I’ve just come back here, for the first time in 18 years, but I did get to go to my first Warped last year in Orlando. I also spent the better part of a year since traveling and relearning a lot about myself, and rediscovering my love for music, skating, amongst other things.

So here’s a little ode to all the all the places I’ve been this past year, the soles that got me there, and the festival that, at least when I was growing up, made it cool af to be different. Thank you @kevinlyman 🫶

Spoiler: The new ones already have miles upon miles on ‘em, and aren’t so new anymore. We’re gonna be alright, kids.

Really just become a way to show my friends what I did today and hopefully, make their scroll feel a little more inspiring ♥️

There’s a lot I can say about the Village, but many more eloquent than I have said it already. But this isn’t about a place, as much as it is a reminder that if you look just a little more closely, inspiration is everywhere, and the kids are still doing things. They’re still discovering things with excitement and innocence. They’re alright you might say.

But man, what a place.

A love letter to a my favorite haunted spot in NY.

I can’t help but think of Beirut’s Luna Park by the sea, one of countless homages to this one around the world, beautifully decrepit in its own right, and also I place I know intimately for amusement and reprieve.

Disclaimer: Not even close to a Coney Island historian, just one of the countless humans who haunts the boardwalk.

On coney historians, Micheal Immerso wrote a great book about it called The People’s Playground, without which I wouldn’t have learned its stories.

ngl @lilxlotus’s Error Boy went triple platinum in my car in 2021, so this creative joining of forces is truly everything I didn’t know I needed.

I’ve been having trouble not taking myself too seriously of late. And I was just about to have what was primed to be an overthinky shower when double vision started playing in my head and it turned into a pretty silly sing and dance shower instead. So I guess what I’m trying to say is big ups to 3OH!3 for making “not taking shit too seriously” so cool in my developing consciousness, and for the reminder just now in the shower. Idk how you beamed that epiphany straight into my head that was pretty cool. 🛸

Mostly thanks @3oh3 for making us smile for as long as you have and remaining steadfast reminders that whimsy is a requirement 🫶.

I was asked at @vanswarpedtour Montréal what my Warped anthem was. I said anything by @LessThanJake, and I stand by that, but an even more obvious answer was literally blasting itself into our muscle memories all weekend, impossible to ignore.

All 3 days (including the pre day) bands played Linoleum, and the circle pits naturally ensued, as they have for 30 long years. Upon reflection - Linoleum is literally what Warped sounds like to me. Irreverent, loud, oddly sweet… Linoleum and NOFX left their indelible mark on Warped and punk, and that became more obvious with every new genre it took on, every all ages mosh pit, and every mouthed lyric I saw. For 30 years now, it’s had the same effect on crowds.

The kids never actually seem to get older… it resonates all the same through time.

@nofx played their last show in 2024 (supposedly), but I have no doubt Linoleum will continue to ring out of basements and stages alike for many, many years to come. I even did my part, once upon a time.

This island is more palpably brutalist and gothic than it gets credit for. A truly fascinating melange of utilitarian, intimidating, and retro-futurist.

(Yes, I’m reclaiming island and also yes, not all the scenes featured are examples of brutalist architecture, but - *gestures vaguely* - you get it.)

In sum, it’s kinda metal af?

What a way to wrap Sublime Summer 🤯

Warped Tour trivia time: Did you know @sublime was kicked off the @vanswarpedtour in 1995 for causing “general chaos” and also because Lou Dog the Dalmatian, was in fact biting skateboarders. @KevinLyman sent them home for a week to think about what they’d done before they could come back. And that was their last Warped... until now.

31 years later, we have @jakobnowell, doing all of us, and most of all Brad, mighty proud.

The general chaos this time around, well that was all on us. Mea culpa 💅.

Must be Sublime 💖
