My Role in Bridging Period Poverty and Enhancing the Reproductive Health of Young People

On May 28th, 2020, I commemorated World Menstrual Hygiene Day by hosting a webinar for teenagers and young people. It was the first project I launched as a young, naïve undergraduate student. During this event, I distributed sanitary pads to selected girls to help bridge period poverty, and I also launched my first initiative, *Talk2Temmie Girls Hub*.

Since then, I have continued to observe World Menstrual Hygiene Day by organizing health education programs, distributing sanitary pads to young people, and volunteering with organizations to execute several projects .

Having spent over four years in the social impact space, I have heard firsthand accounts from teenage girls who have experienced sexual assault and abuse as a result of challenges related to period poverty.

At the recently concluded Thriving Teens Conference, we sponsored one year’s worth of sanitary pads for 10 teenage girls. I am incredibly grateful that, through this initiative, at least 10 young girls have been relieved from the challenges of period poverty.

As we commemorate the 16days activism against SGBV, I am deeply inspired to continue advancing the reproductive health and well-being of young people, working towards a world where every young person is safe, healthy, and empowered.

In the spirit of commemorating the 16 Days of Activism Against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, I reflect on my journey as an advocate against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and in advancing the reproductive health and wellbeing of young people.

My advocacy journey started based on my curiosity to find a means to end FGM in my family, I was a teenager when my niece was mutilated in my presence, I was really bothered and disturbed about the effect the practice had on my niece , this made me ask several questions and I was told it was our usual cultural practice, sadly to say I’m also a survivor of FGM.

Fast forward to becoming an undergraduate nursing student, I discovered FGM to be one of the leading harmful traditional practices affecting the reproductive health and wellbeing of women and girls, I made research on FGM and started using my voice to advocate against Female Genital Mutilation, while I was able to end FGM in my family, I didn’t just stop there I started creating awareness about it via my social media and also volunteered and worked with organizations advocating towards ending FGM.

Now, with over five years of advocacy against FGM and other forms of gender-based violence, I am grateful for the opportunity to be a leading voice in this movement and for the chance to contribute globally to ending FGM and gender-based violence. My passion for creating a world where women and girls are free from violence and have access to reproductive health information and services remains as strong as ever.

As we commemorate the 16 days of activism, my call to action is to encourage young people like me those who are passionate about creating change to continue raising our voices and using our available social media platforms to advocate for this cause. While we await global opportunities, let’s focus on making intentional, impactful change locally, working to create a world where everyone is safe, respected, and free of violence.

In the coming days left in the 16 Days of Activism Against GBV, I will be sharing more about my recent work as an advocate, as well as an exciting upcoming program. Stay tuned for details!

I documented my journey to Addis Ababa in a vlog! 🤩❤️

I love how all the clips came together. Oh, how I love creating memories and documenting them!

From a throwback to my 2023 advocacy trip (thank you, @valuefemalenetwork_ l ❤️) to stepping into my new role as Secretary for Finance at the Global Youth Consortium Against Harmful Practices…

From navigating my absence with my baby girl (my darling husband was holding it down for me 🥹😍 My solid man! 🙌❤️) to managing my milk supply with the help of latched and Loved breast pump @latched_and_loved (thank you for making my breastfeeding journey easier)…

The strategic planning, advocacy works, networking, fun, and, of course, the whole flight experience, I definitely had a great time and I’m so glad I captured these memories. 🥰

Did you watch till the end?👀😂

MY DAUGHTER IS ONE!!! 🥹❤️ A whole whooping ONE YEAR of being a mother! 😭😍

I had planned a whole epistle in my head to write as I celebrated my daughter’s first birthday. 😂

I wanted to talk about all the ups and downs, all the gbasgbos, the tears, the lessons, the sacrifices, the beautiful moments… EVERYTHING! 😭😂

But then today came, and all I can feel is overwhelming gratitude. Deep, deep gratitude! And so much love that I can’t even remember half of the things I planned to write again. 🥹🥹❤️

I know it wasn’t easy, but GOD HELPED ME! And He sent people who showed up for me, held my hands, encouraged me, and made this journey a little easier. 🥹❤️

From navigating motherhood alongside my career, academics, and advocacy work, to figuring things out one day at a time, God carried me through this first year Himself. 🙌❤️

And even though I’m only just starting, and I know there’s still so much ahead of me, this first year has given me hope and assurance that things will get better. I will keep learning. I will keep growing. I will keep showing up. I will do this motherhood thing well. I WILL EXCEL, by God’s grace!🥹❤️

Happy birthday to my Light! My Superstar! My answered prayer, my little sunshine, my precious gift from God. 🥹❤️ You have brought so much love and meaning into my life, and I’m grateful to God for the privilege of being your mum. @mojetoluwa_light

And to me… HAPPY ONE YEAR OF MOTHERHOOD! 🥰🥰🥰❤️

One year of learning, loving, growing, and becoming.

GOD DID IT! AND HE WILL KEEP HELPING ME.

I sat in the room today, representing millions of women and girls across Africa. As I step into this new role, I renew my commitment to using my voice to advocate against harmful practices.

At GYC, this is more than assuming a new role. This is responsibility. This is a call to serve, to lead, and to be accountable for our actions.

The work continues. We’re the generation to end FGM and other harmful practices

I am excited and deeply honoured to join the new Executive Team members of the Global Youth Consortium Against Harmful Practices (GYC-HP).

I celebrate the outgoing Executive Team members led by Dr Costly, @costlyaderibigbe for their leadership, dedication, and the impact they have made in advancing our collective mission.

Having had the opportunity to serve at the country level in Nigeria alongside the past executive teams, I am grateful and excited to take on a new responsibility as Undersecretary for Finance at the global level for this new tenure.

I will be in Addis Ababa for the next few days for strategic consultation, orientation, and leadership transition, and I look forward to strengthening our collective efforts towards ending FGM by 2030 and eliminating other harmful practices.

As I step into this role, I am passionately committed to using my voice, skills, and position to advocate for the rights, safety, and protection of Nigerian girls and women, as well as girls and women across Africa.

Together, let’s accelerate youth-led action towards a future free from FGM and harmful practices.
