With a feminist dramaturg mother and politician father, life for Melissa Auf Der Maur was never going to be boring. Moving into Montreal’s “Grunge Estates”, she became part of the local music scene before a meeting with Billy Corgan took her to the heart of ’90s grunge and alternative culture.

Billy later suggested she meet Courtney Love, leading Melissa, reluctantly at first, to become Hole’s bassist. Just seven gigs in, she was playing to 65,000 people at Reading Festival. What followed was a whirlwind of underground chaos, addiction, tragedy, notoriety, pop success and relationships with some of rock’s biggest names, including Dave Grohl and, briefly, Billy Corgan.

This week, Melissa joins Miranda Sawyer on Talk ’90s to Me to talk Courtney Love, life in Hole, moving on to The Smashing Pumpkins, and why she’s always been a bit of a witch.

The Simpsons’ ’90s episodes have long been credited with channelling subversive and challenging themes beneath the veneer of traditional family values and bright, expressive animation. And nowhere was this more visible than in Homer’s Phobia, the 1997 episode guest-starring John Waters in which Homer worries that Bart is gay.
