In Nigeria, we call him Tombolo. In Colombia, they called him Escobar. Two worlds apart, yet the same story.
Both men rose from the streets, feeding the poor, shielding the helpless, doing what the government refused to do, even if the proceeds were from deep crimes. The people loved them, not because they were saints but because they showed up when the system disappeared.

Then came the twist. The bandits became the lawmakers. The rogues put on suits, entered parliament, and rewrote the rules to clean their crimes. And in other cases, they became too powerful, and the government incorporated them into its operations.
The people cheered. Bread had blinded their eyes to blood.

When leadership fails, charity becomes a crown for criminals.
And when a nation forgets what justice feels like, the thief who gives becomes more beloved than the ruler who withholds. But then, there was a forerunner, his name was Hood. Robin Hood.

So today, we still clap for Tombolo, his copycats, do-alikes, et al. in agbada, suits and curious caps, forgetting Escobar’s ghost in the corridors of power. We are a sleeping people, and the ghost haunts our dreams. by @talkanni
