Life keeps life-ing.

I’m still missing my friend every day, but her absence has made me take life a little less seriously, worry less, spend more intentional time with my kids, and s l o w down so I don’t miss out on the most important things. So today, when we passed this beautiful spot while driving Sutton to play practice, we ran out of the car and spent just a little time adventuring together.

We could’ve easily missed it. Missed out on these memories. Missed my son saying, “this is so cool” and my daughter singing at the top of her lungs while skipping beside the lake.

Thankful for new eyes to see what’s most important and take the extra time before it slips through my fingers. Thanks, Stef. 💕💕 by @talkatiff

Yesterday, my best friend, Stefanie, went to be with Jesus.

I met Stefanie in 2008, just after she’d gotten engaged. A friend suggested we invite her into the small group we were forming, and little did I know we would meet every other week for the next eight years. We walked through so much life together—births, miscarriage, infertility, weddings, career launches (and falls), and everything in between.

When she moved to Washington in 2018, we took to Voxer, sending each other ridiculously long messages almost daily. When you talk to someone that much, you know everything about them—down to how much milk is in their fridge and when it’s time for a haircut.

And because Stefanie listened and learned people so well, she really knew me. So when she encouraged me, reminded me of what was true, or gently pointed me in another direction, her words carried weight.

Lately, I keep noticing geese flying in V formation and wondering if God was trying to tell me something. I found myself thinking about how they know which bird to follow. How one moves to the front and takes the point, leading others forward.

Two and a half weeks ago, when I learned Stefanie’s prognosis had gotten worse, I jumped in my car and headed toward Portland. As I was packing, I looked out my bedroom window and again, I saw birds flying in a V.

“God, what are You trying to tell me?”

And suddenly, I knew.

She was the leader.

Even though Stefanie rarely saw herself that way, she was leading all of us. Showing us what it looks like to live by faith even when you don’t receive the promises you prayed for on this side of eternity. The kind of faith Hebrews 11 describes.

And now, she’s leading us into eternity. She went first. The first of us to see Jesus face to face. The first to see what we have only believed by faith.

I’d give almost anything for one more ridiculously long Voxer about kids and husbands and work and groceries and God.

But for now, my friend has taken the point.
Someday, I’ll follow her Home.

I love you, Stefanie. You led us well. by @talkatiff

Our kids’ elementary school was a Mandarin immersion campus, so we got to celebrate all the Chinese holidays together as a community. The Moon Festival was always my favorite. 🏮

Peep Hudson as a kindergartener: front teeth missing, proudly showing off his very first Moon Festival lantern. Adorable. Tiny. Toothless. 🥹

And somehow, that little guy became a senior?!

How did this happen so fast? I’d like a refund on time, please.

Not cool. 😭

Hudson has a pivotal role in our family: first-born.

He helped set the tone of our family dynamic.

He was my first child, and so he’s the kid I learned the most from. And he’s the one who’s had to learn to forgive me most as I stumbled my way through motherhood.

He’s been such a great big brother. Protective, thoughtful, responsible, respectful. Thank you, Hudson! We love you!

A doctor’s appointment turned into a rare little date with Hudson, complete with an enormous slice of pizza, lots of laughs, and a crash course in mining, iron ore, and pickaxes. 😂

We started out quiet, with me wondering what to talk about. Turns out, I just needed to let him pick the topic. ⛏️

I remember thinking, “Soak this in. Time is going to fly.”

Now it’s three months from his 18th bday. I would like to speak to whoever approved that. 😭❤️ by @talkatiff

For his 16th bday, Cooper had an interesting request. He wanted to record a song at a professional studio with some friends. And thanks to @thesoundhouseredding, we made it happen! They all had a blast & learned a lot. by @talkatiff

Hudson spent the weekend at the ranch with the same group of friends he’s been making memories with since 7th grade. (Swipe for the 2nd trip they spent there. I don’t have any pics from their first time there!).

From 7th to 12th grade—time just flew. It’s fun to see how important this group of friends has been & how they all still enjoy each other’s company, even after all these years.

Hope this trend continues as they all go off to college next year 😱😭🤯.

Today my little NICU warrior preemie baby, Cooper, turned 16! 🤯

This kid has continually amazed me from the very beginning.

Eight weeks before he was due, my water broke, and I spent the next two weeks in the hospital trying to keep him safely tucked inside as long as possible. When my doctor began talking about inducing labor, I was so worried. I kept wondering, Is he ready? Is he gonna be too little? Is he healthy enough to live outside the womb?

Right before he was born, I dreamed Cooper was born weighing six pounds…and he was eating steak. 😂

Somehow, I woke up with this deep sense that he was going to be okay. More than okay, actually. I felt like God was reassuring me that this little boy was going to be strong and healthy—and that there was something remarkable about him.

And boy, has he proven that to be true. Cooper actually WAS a shocking 6 lbs when he was born (huge for a preemie) and has always seemed to be several steps ahead of us.

He could spell at 17 months old when most kids were just learning to talk. He used to sit quietly in the backseat of the car listening to our “private” conversations, soaking in absolutely everything and offering advice as a 3 year old. 😂 He’s taught himself to play instrument after instrument by watching YouTube videos and playing by ear. He has literally created entire languages. He’s an incredible actor, a gifted singer and musician, ridiculously intelligent, inventive, hilarious…and occasionally just a little too smart for his own good. 😉

Watching him onstage is one of my favorite things in the world, but even more than all of his talent, I love watching the person he is becoming.

Sixteen years ago, I was lying in a hospital bed wondering what the future would hold for this tiny little boy who was arriving much earlier than planned. Today, I look at him and think: the sky truly is the limit.

Coop, you have been surprising and amazing us since before you were even born. I cannot wait to see what you do with that brilliant, creative brain and all the gifts God has put inside of you.

Happy 16th birthday, Cooper. I absolutely love being your mom. ❤️🎶🎭🥩 by @talkatiff

As Taylor said, August slipped away like a moment in time.

But here are some of those moments to remember.

1. The Allens & Williams had a Tulsa-ish reunion at @ruthie.joy.kennedy’s beautiful wedding! (Ok, so this was the end of July, but I am counting it.)

2. The bride and groom (and their adoring fans).

3. Steve & Judy Swift. One of the most influential couples in our lives. And we got to spend a glorious evening with them!

4. Two California girls geeking out by sparklers (you mean, these glitter sticks aren’t illegal everywhere?!)

5. The real ones know.

6. Adventures in BwoodTX with @cassiebird.

7. Cooper taught himself the Alto Sax by watching a couple of YouTube videos. 🤯

8. First day of 10th grade

9. First day of senior year

10. First day of 8th grade (x2)

11. Mom and dad celebrate their 20th anniversary

12. More celebrating

13. Happy day, Jazzy!

14. A weekend in Napa!

15. I stepped in as Director of @church_awakening (and @pattireich made me this binder!)

16. We love you, @stefanieoverstreet!

17. Go, Cougs! (@cougsfhs9733)

18. Sutton is ANNIEEEEE!! @axreptheatre

19. Dinner with the best!

20. Happy bday, Max (AKA “Cooper’s protege”—according to Cooper). @makismommy by @talkatiff

This is one of my favorite memories. It was just an ordinary Thursday after school. I don’t remember why, but I didn’t have the other kids with me so I took Hudson to Spoon Me for FroYo, just the two of us. I was so proud of myself for finding that shirt that said “Hudson” on it, 😂 so I snapped a pic.

Nothing monumental. Nothing super expensive or cool. Just a little trip out for FroYo, yet it stands out in my memory because he was so thoughtful and excited to be there, so handsome and fun. And in all of those ways, he hasn’t changed a bit.

Hudson, there once was a day where we spent most of our days together. Just you and me.

You’re the only one of my kids who I got to enjoy with no other kids vying for my attention.

I loved those times and will always cherish them, but I’ve never enjoyed times with you more than I do right now. It’s so fun to see you owning your life, becoming a responsible driver with a good job, being a good friend and brother, pulling your weight about the house, and telling us funny stories.

Thanks for making me a mom & for always being there with me since the very beginning.
