Join SUM gallery on Sep 27 for a FREE cameraless Phytogram Workshop, facilitated by KJ Edwards (Kanien'kehá:ka, mixed-settler interdisciplinary artist). 🌱 Priority will be given to Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer Artists. 🎞️

Phytograms, first coined by artist Karel Doing, are made by soaking plant material in an eco-friendly developer and placing them directly onto the film, creating imprints of the plants within the emulsion. This workshop will teach participants how to mix their developer, apply their chosen plants onto 16mm and 35mm B&W film stock. Participants will learn how to fix and splice 16mm film for projection, as well as how to use and load a 16mm projector, demonstrated by KJ. 📽️

This workshop does not require camera experience or analogue film experience!

Registration information can be found in our LinkTree. Presented in partnership with Full Circle: First Nations Performance. 🌺 taken in Queer Arts Festival + SUM gallery by @talkingstickfst

What power lies in Indigenous storytelling, mythology, and imagination?

Spend an evening celebrating internationally acclaimed Haisla and Heiltsuk author Eden Robinson’s new novel, The Sorceress of Sky Serpents.

Following a welcome from @manuelaxelstrain, Robinson will be joined by Secwépemc and St’at’imc writer Julian Brave NoiseCat (@jnoisecat) for a conversation exploring the inspirations behind her richly imagined world, the role of Indigenous mythology in contemporary fantasy, and how stories can carry culture, identity and resilience.

The evening will feature an engaging discussion, an audience Q&A and a post-event reception, where Robinson will be signing books. Other books by Robinson and NoiseCat will also be available for purchase onsite.

This event is supported by @randomhouseca, @sfu_library, @sfulive, @capulibrary, and @talkingstickfst.

A signed copy of The Sorceress of Sky Serpents is included with the purchase of a Book Ticket.
