POSTS STORIES REELS

Resentment is not random.. it’s a signal that something needs to change … by @talkswithderrick

Betrayal can leave a person battling intrusive thoughts, replaying memories, questioning what was real, or experiencing flashbacks to moments they wish they could forget. For some, trauma can even develop into post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

And sometimes, those who cause the hurt become uncomfortable with the reaction of the person they hurt.

Thing is healing doesn’t happen on OUR timeline. WE don’t get to decide how long it takes someone to trust again, what triggers their pain, or when they should be over it.

Sometimes, the hardest part of healing is learning how to feel safe again in places where you once felt loved.

Man, take me back to the Farm. 🌿

A few months ago, I had the privilege of presenting at the Children’s Defense Fund’s Hall-Proctor Institute at Alex Haley Farm in Tennessee. I spoke on “Creating Safe Spaces for Healing: Trust, Mental Health, and Faith Communities for Today’s Young Adults.”

Thank you to my good brother, Reverend Trevor Beauford, for the invitation, and Reverend Dr. Starsky Wilson for the warm welcome and hospitality.

To stand on the grounds of Alex Haley Farm during the 50th anniversary of Roots was a reminder that our stories matter. The stories we inherit, the wounds we carry, and the work we do to ensure the next generation has a different story to tell.

To be in that sacred place, among people committed to the well-being of our children and communities, was a gift. The work of healing is sacred, and so is the responsibility to make sure our young people know they are seen, heard, and cared for.

Grateful for the opportunity. Even more grateful for the work. by @talkswithderrick

Tevin Campbell asked… “Can We Talk..?” The real question is CAN YOU LISTEN? #ProgressThroughPlaylist by @talkswithderrick

Grateful to be back in spaces where w can have honest conversations about Black Mental Health! Speaking at this year’s 7th Black Mental Wellness Conference! Go register and join me there! by @talkswithderrick

It’s something about the relationships that are closest to our hearts that seem to do the most damage when there’s a rupture. A smell, a song, even a sound can have a boomerang effect … Does anybody know what I’m talking about?? by @talkswithderrick

Have you noticed that one relationship in particular depletes you? I mean leaves you exhausted…. Progress Through Playlist…. by @talkswithderrick

Has someone ever tried to gaslight you after they hurt you to minimize your pain and emphasize their need for YOU to move on? Progress Through Playlist… by @talkswithderrick

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to be in a room filled with people thinking deeply about the mental health and well-being of Black men.

As someone who has spent years studying, researching, and working alongside Black communities, this experience meant a lot to me.

What continues to stand out to me is how much work there is still to do and how important it is that we create spaces where Black men are not only talked about, but are heard, supported, and centered in the conversation.

Grateful for the conversations, the connections, and the reminder that this work is bigger than any one of us. by @talkswithderrick

So much LIFE has happened in this city over the last year. Training, growing, grieving, rebuilding, working, finding community and somewhere along the way officially becoming a doctor.

It still amazes me how much growth and transformation can happen in 12 months. Just a year ago I matched at Harvard for my last year of pre-doctoral clinical training. At times it feels like I’ve grown more clinically this year than I have an all five years of doctoral training combined.

Boston has been really good to me and I really enjoyed every moment. Here’s a few highlights from my clinical year of training, including my Harvard graduation.

Blessed to have the world’s greatest sister who came up to share in this moment with me. Here’s to MORE! Maybe by @talkswithderrick

Each day it feels a little more real…. #Graduation

People always want to know what I’d do if I didn’t …

I guess we’ll never know.
