Ann Patchett has long been my writing hero. Not only does she tell unique, heartfelt stories, but she writes them with such beauty—every metaphor, sentence, and word earns its place on the page. I asked her how she writes so poetically at the line level, and this is what she said:
•Reading your writing aloud (to your dog, if you have one)
•Practicing (and practicing, and practicing)
•And noticing the world around you.

I started this community ten years ago after a trip to the Cotswolds that inspired me to write my first novel. Now, there’s almost 15,000 of you. In one of my favorite books about writing, Sue Monk Kidd says, “Writing is difficult—full of hard work, doubt, fear, rejection, agonizing persistence, and death-defying trapeze leaps. But writing is also diable—let’s put that out there, too. Sometimes, a writer needs to get away from the everyday demands in order to focus on the deeper demand of writing a book. An onlooker might think—ooh! What a vacation. But they don’t quite understand. With everything on a woman’s plate—the physical and emotional load of caring for ourselves & our families while also running a business—our own creative work often gets the leftovers. At times it takes a physical shift to feel a mental one, to clear the cobwebs of life and access our depths, where our best, most authentic storytelling comes from. It’s a privilege to book a night at a hotel to focus. But, it’s not exactly a vacation. Only a writer knows the necessity of depth and focus this kind of writing requires. It can be lonely and frustrating. There’s pressure around this gorgeous sliver of time, especially as a mother, to use it productively and wisely. While this weekend had some very lovely and rewarding bits, it was less GNO! energy and more lock the F in kind of energy. And I highly recommend it if you want to finish your book. by @talkwordytome_
