and for the lady who loves to be outside, perhaps a (first!!!!) tattoo that celebrates how at home she feels when she’s away? one that honors her grandmother’s decision to leave high school in South Carolina and join my grandfather, who’d enlisted in the Air Force, knowing it might be her only way to see the world and eventually show it to her children? I fell in love with Afrobeats 15 years ago. used to memorize lyrics from the @bissapbaobab dance floor and Google them when I got home for the song titles to add to my iPod. Afrobeats casts a line from my spirit back across the Atlantic and reels me in a little closer.I knew #afronation would deliver, but never in my life have I experienced a collective tethering like that. the festival felt like an answer to a question we’ve all asked, whether from Atlanta, Johannesburg, Paris, or São Paulo. (and also Estonia, Suriname, Sweden, etc because we are truly everywhere!) what a profound feeling to admire and be admired by each other so loudly — and *ahem* there was A LOT to admire 😮‍💨three days of heat and pressure. throwbacks and new jams. World Cup intermissions on the beach. testing our endurance as we dragged our feet through the sand one last time for WizKid, who closed out AfroNation like the Starboy he is. winding through the thickness of the strip at 4am like heady zombies. marveling at the glory of our blackness. I am exhausted beyond comprehension and would appreciate y’all un-involving me from social activities for the rest of the year (or so 🤭) because I simply have nothing left to give!can’t wait for the next one. in conclusion: EVERY LIFETIME, POR FAVOR 🤎 by @tamerra_nikol

the group stage was gluttonous. been subsisting on wings, Caesar salad, seltzer, and meals eaten from a plate balanced on my lap in our on-set “living room” because we’ve wrapped and the second half of Belgium-Egypt is about to start. I continue to wrap my head around Chicago. never have I visited a city that embodied the west coast, the South, *and* the east coast in fairly equal measure??? while still being completely its own. I feel like a need a syllabus (complimentary).anyway, moving on to the knockout stage! gird your loins 😜ps: not the owners of the Senegalese restaurant calling me a good luck charm bc my yassa craving coincided with the team’s one win so far. they said I had to take pics with them and come back for the next one(art: @make.one.mo asked me if they could embellish my birthmark with a pop of eyeshadow and I have felt like Rainbow Fish ever since) by @tamerra_nikol
