#Data. #Research. #Journalism. Navigating the Transformation Paradox. Decoding Weird Times.
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I'm working on a docuseries for YouTube called WEIRD NEW NOW, focused on the intersection of #tech and #culture, navigating transformation paradoxes, unraveling 'future-shock' and the #liminality permeating our modern lives. From the problems of #AI-astroturfing and the ever-increasing hold of #surveillance, to the rollout of hyperscale data centers and the risk shift from Big Tech onto consumers and the environment, I will be walking through the various issues and challenges we are facing in these weird and unprecedented times, and sharing what I find along the way.

That said, I set up this page in lieu of a Substack or Patreon, because I think Ko-Fi is a lot more flexible for my purposes. Here, you will find:

- the Hyperdrive Archive (articles from my former blog)
- writing from other publications
- posts from social media
- my music
- research

...and more. Ko-Fi is now the one-stop shop for all the things I create and share, and how you can best support me in these endeavors. However, if Ko-Fi doesn't do it for you, you can always donate to me directly (and anonymously). Thanks for being here, and stay strong everyone 💪

For the past year, I’ve been intently focused on the data center boom, the resulting energy crisis, expansion of surveillance tech, and the ecological and public health consequences of these systems.

These are deeply physically interconnected issues. A new wave of #technofascism is fracturing our communities and accelerating the destruction of our planet. It isn’t news. But most people feel helpless to confront these issues, too exhausted and overwhelmed to act. Perhaps that is by design...

Let's unsubscribe from Big Tech & get local together. Join me as we navigate the Transformation Paradox, disassemble Future-Shock, and decode these Weird Times. Link in comment.

Hey, folks - for anyone who's wondering what to do after a data center (or really any kind of large industrial project) is proposed in your area, or you are looking to inform your community and to brace for any such proposals, I've got some excellent resources from 3 orgs to share with ya'll.

Here's one from @mediajustice "The People Say No:
Resisting Data Centers Toolkit". This is a highly digestible, great ELI5 explainer, with facts, case studies, and activities you can share & explore:
https://mediajustice.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/MediaJustice-The-People-Say-No-Resisting-Data-Centers-Toolkit.pdf

Next up is a facts sheet with talking points from @foodandwaterwatch which is a messaging guide that lays out more facts and top talking points:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Dqo7slEFU5Yx8RXg2GhjBeWBO3UwzsVym8Cg5vwEQ6o/

Last, but not least, Fairshake @fairshakeels has an awesome library of resources: https://www.fairshake-els.org/community-democracy-river

...as well as this interactive presentation that explains how to push back, no matter where you find yourself in this process: https://prezi.com/view/MnLJGtYPXdgdAGTE84Cg/

Orgs tagged in photos, please follow them for more info. Go local & stay strong, everyone!

Coined by sociologist Jacob Hacker, the "risk shift" refers to the systematic transfer of insecurity and risk from corporations and the government onto individual households. Hyperscale data centers demand massive public investments in local water systems, electrical substations, and transmission lines; costs typically amortized over decades. If a data center closes before those investments are recovered, the local community is left footing the bill for abandoned, oversized infrastructure.

Tax exemptions shield multi-billion-dollar corporations from local sales taxes, while massive grid demands threaten to drive up residential electricity rates. Making matters worse, tax credit agreements often contain confidentiality clauses that allow corporations to withhold their annual sales-tax exemption reports from public disclosure.

At the same time, communities are learning that the economic promises of data centers rarely match the promised reality. Despite consuming vast land footprints, data centers generate very few permanent jobs. A national review of 1,200 facilities revealed that even 1,000-acre campuses employ fewer than 150 permanent workers, and sometimes as few as 25.

Over 2k reads since May...the most read research at Adams. I'm not sharing this to gloat, although it *is* incredible that a student paper has this much traction; but rather, because this shows that people are seeking out information about how to study the health impacts of infrasound and low-frequency noise (ILFN). Several researchers from around the country have reached out. All of us want a comprehensive analytical framework to show how ILFN affects #publichealth, because here in the United States, there are no national, federally enforceable regulations that specifically restrict ILFN... and now, even less so for other types of #pollution caused by #datacenters.
