I am fairly certain that I will stop using Duolingo soon. This streak concept has kept me motivated to continue using the app, but not motivated to continue learning. Don't get me wrong, I have been learning still, but it's not the same now as it was five and a half years ago. I stopped paying for Super in December.

I've watched some of my Duolingo friends lose their streak only when they pass away after keeping it when they were super sick which also motivated me to keep it.

It's hard to let go of this thing I have been doing every day. I love the community behind it. I have fond memories.

Repeatedly failing pronunciation of sentences in Russian while walking through a horse ranch.

Doing my Duolingo before midnight in a music venue and making new friends because of it.

Completing my first full year of monthly quests.

Winning the Diamond Tournament.

Calling my sister from the hospital and asking her to please do my Duolingo before giving her any other information. (That one is funny now.)

Having my Spanish speaking friend do my Spanish Duolingo one night and watching them get them all wrong. by @tammylaforest

In June, I flew on six airplanes, but my raincoat only flew on three.

I caught a cold in France. I thought it was allergies, but I was wrong. I bought tissues from behind the counter of a pharmacy and placed them in my raincoat pocket, opposite a package of rice cakes, and flew to London.

As I walked through a giant data center that day, my symptoms worsened. By lunch, I knew I had caught a cold. I only had one night there, but I knew I wouldn't be sightseeing.

I was two minutes into my Lyft ride from the data center to the hotel when I realized I had forgotten my raincoat, but I was too exhausted to do anything about it. I thought I would just go back another time, even though this was London, and I had no plan to come back. Tragically, this also meant I left behind my soft, French tissues, and I would depend on the scratchy tissues and napkins from wherever I found myself.

I bought some unfamiliar painkillers from a vending machine and took some Benadryl, still thinking it could just be allergies, and tried to sleep it off.

The next morning I was on a flight to Milan, Italy. Flying with a head cold puts incredible pressure on your ears, and I completely lost my hearing on one side for a day. I was miserable for the weekend. My face was raw and bleeding as I walked through Milan trying to figure out how to buy tissues in Italian. I bought a pack from another pharmacy, but would soon run out. I needed more for my flight home, but this last pharmacy only had multi-packs of tissues, so I planned to hand them out as souvenirs, and bought more unfamiliar medicine too.

I soon recovered from the cold and the jet lag, but I missed my raincoat. It was one of those things that made me feel like I had become a real adult. It was long, fitted, had a proper hood, and repelled water without making crinkling sounds or blowing in the wind. Plus I spent over $60 on it.

I returned to London in September, but this time I rented a car. I had been driving on the opposite side of the car and road for four days when I was finally reunited with my raincoat. In the pockets were stale rice cakes and used tissues. It came home with me, and now I can walk in the rain again. by @tammylaforest

As we narrow down possible homes to move into, we have to make the difficult choice of choosing one that will or will not allow pets. It has been too quiet since Toonces died. We had a routine. He would greet me at the door with a loud meow. I would pick him up and hold him for a few seconds. Then I would put him down, and we would walk together to his food bowl, which would still be full because he would not eat when we were not there with him. He wanted to be together.
I still want to be together. I miss him. And with one child off to college, the house is more and more empty. Can I really commit to a house without pets? I don't know. But our best options right now have that restriction. My heart aches. I know I will never get Toonces back, but I would like to hear little paws on the floor once again. by @tammylaforest
