Happy Birthday, Tallon! 🎂💙

You arrived on September 30th, National Non-Speaking / Non-Verbal Awareness Day 🗣️, and I don’t believe that’s a coincidence.

You’ve taught me that communication lives far deeper than words.

Every voice matters, spoken, signed, or symbolized.

I love you beyond measure, my son. 💙 by @tammymccrary

Five rooms. Two sides of the pond. Eight days.

Since headlining BBC Radio 2 in the Park in Scotland: a New York Fashion Week stage, where she received the Fashion Innovator Award from Emerge.

A room at SiriusXM where she played Chakzilla for the first time anywhere, with Questlove asking the questions.

Release day.

A party in New York I will remember for a long time.
And a rock festival on a beach in Asbury Park, on a bill with The Strokes, Mumford & Sons and The Offspring.

Talent gets you the first room. What carries you through five is competence, and competence is what daily practice makes reliable.

Swipe through it. Chakzilla is out now.

Stirling, Scotland. Saturday night.
Fifty three years into making records, Chaka walked out to perform to a sea of people in Scotland and held the whole thing in her hand.
That is what I keep coming back to. Not that she can still do it. That she still wants to. Six decades in and she is still writing, still recording, still standing in front of strangers in the cold and giving them everything she has. There is no version of this that is owed to her. She chooses it, every single time.
Collaborations like an ever blooming flower. Prince. Quincy. Miles. Stevie. Joni. Ariana. Sia. Snoop. Lenny. And so many more. Not one of them from the same world. On Saturday @alexandraburke, who plays her in the musical about her life, came out to sing “I’m Every Woman” beside her. Another petal.
Thirty three years I have stood beside @chakakhan as my business partner. A great deal longer as my sister. And she still takes my breath.
Chakzilla, her first studio album in more than seven years, is out Friday. Sixth decade, still blooming.
