We went for the Foo and stayed for a handful of AC/DC songs. We were home and ready for bed by 10 pm. We party hard like that. 🤪

I almost cried over caterpillars yesterday. 🥹

One of my biggest garden goals this year was to make my little patch of the world more welcoming to pollinators—and, if I was really lucky, to attract my very favorite butterfly, the Pipevine Swallowtail.

I planted the pipevine. I added more flowers for nectar. And I hoped they would find me.

Yesterday, I looked up and there they were.

Pipevine Swallowtail caterpillars.

Not just a butterfly passing through for a visit.

A butterfly chose my garden as a place for the next generation. 🥹

I can’t adequately explain how ridiculously happy that makes me.

Sometimes a simple joy is really, really small.

Sometimes it’s small, black, a little spiky, and happily munching holes in your plants. 😂

And sometimes it’s the wonderful realization that when you make a little room for nature, nature really does move in.

Welcome home, little ones. I’ve been waiting for you.

Reasons I strength train and lift heavy weights…

Because when I decide I want to go buy a whole bunch of big ol’ heavy rocks, I can. 💪🏻🤣

I can lift them into the cart.

I can push that ridiculously heavy cart all the way from the back of the @loweshomeimprovement garden center to my car.

I can load those rocks into my car.

I can unload those rocks when I get home.

And I can carry every one of those rocks into my garden.

A very nice Lowe’s employee did ask if I needed help loading them.

I very proudly said, “Nope, I got this!” 💪🏻

This is one of my favorite things about being strong. It isn’t just about what I can lift in the gym. It’s about being able to do the things I want to do outside of it.

Even when the thing I want to do is apparently haul half a quarry home in the back of my car. 🤣

Also — if you’re looking for flagstone, check your local Lowe’s! I’ve been really impressed with the size and quality of these pieces for the price.

It is hot outside. Silly hot.

But somehow, sitting here beside “the creek,” it doesn’t feel quite so bad.

First, can we please take a moment to appreciate the fact that apparently I’ve been gardening in socks and shoes all summer? 🤣 I’m thinking it’s going to take more than one afternoon sitting pondside to even out this farmer’s tan.

Second… why did I wait so long to build a pond?

I am completely smitten with this little corner of my garden. I love what it has become, the way it keeps evolving, and especially the way pieces of it remind me of places and people I love.

And now I get to sit here and listen.

Water trickling. Birds calling. Dragonflies zipping past. Bees stopping for a drink. All this new little life showing up because there’s water here now.

Building it by hand in the middle of a ridiculously hot summer may not have been my brightest idea. 😂 There has been a whole lot of sweat, dirt, sore muscles and more than a few “I’ll figure that part out later” moments.

But sitting here with my feet up, listening to my little creek?

Worth every single ache.

Maybe even worth the sock tan. 🤣

Still a work in progress, but Captain James T. Kroak’s new home at the big pond makes me smile. Just like in the in the patio pond, he sits above all the action so he can keep an eye on it all.

And can we talk about how perfect this piece of flagstone is for a waterfall? I found it at my local @loweshomeimprovement 💙

I still have to find a few more pieces to fit on the side of the water fall before it’s done. But so far, it is giving me all the happy feels.

I’ve been building a pond in my backyard.

You may have noticed the little concrete bridge and wondered why it’s there.

Today’s rain seemed like the perfect time to tell you.

When I was little, my great-grandma Honey lived near Bryant Creek in the Missouri Ozarks. My sister and I spent countless summer days playing in the creek, especially at an old low-water crossing everyone simply called “the slab.”

When the creek was up, water would rush right over the concrete, and we’d stand there laughing with the current flowing around our feet.

Some of my happiest childhood memories happened on that slab.

A few weeks ago, while I was back in the Ozarks, I discovered you can actually buy bags of rock collected from Bryant Creek. That one little discovery turned a dream into a project. Suddenly, I knew exactly what my pond was supposed to become.

A little piece of Bryant Creek… right here at home. 🩷

The funny part? I thought I’d be making repeated 3½-hour trips to Springfield to haul home bags of creek rock. Instead, I discovered my local Menards carries the very same rock.

When it came time to choose a location, I kept coming back to one odd little corner of the yard.

There’s a random piece of sidewalk there that once led to an old driveway, along with a forgotten concrete slab that had been sitting beside it for years.

Then it hit me.

It wasn’t just an old piece of concrete.

It was my slab.

So I dug the pond a little bigger, set the slab in place as a bridge, and built the whole pond around it.

Normally, the water sits well below the bridge.

But after today’s rain…

It’s almost there.

I’m supposed to be disappointed that I can’t work in the garden today.

Instead, I’m secretly hoping for just a little more rain.

Because if the water rises another inch or two, I’ll get to stand on my slab and feel the water rushing over my feet again.

For just a moment, I’ll be standing in Bryant Creek with Honey again. 🩷

It’s still a work in progress, but I am completely smitten with the pond and water feature I’ve been building this summer.

I’ve wanted moving water in my garden for so many years, and I still can’t quite believe I finally have it.

There’s plenty left to do, but these mornings spent sitting here—watching the water, listening to it trickle, and simply being still—have already become one of my favorite parts of the day.

Now I’m left wondering…

Why did I wait so long?

Every good pond needs a few regulars.

Swim Shady and Koi George have been hanging out on the gravel bar, supervising progress and making sure everything is coming along just as it should.

They’re excellent at quality control… not so great at actually helping. 😄

She comes to visit almost every day. 🦋

I always know it’s her because of the tattered wing.

She starts with the buddleia, makes her way to the tall zinnias, and I always find myself saying,

“Hello again, friend.”

Funny how a little butterfly can become part of your daily routine.

I’m always happy to see her.
