Last week, I ran a fermentation + storytelling workshop at one of my favourite earth-homes ever — the @earthtenders community garden. The Sun was in full radiance, Maxwell was on the speaker, and the shiitake were juicy and hydrated. With gorgeous daikon and kohlrabi grown on the land, we followed the story of salt from its origins in the tides of the oceans and the metallic heart of the earth, through to its powers as a powerful force that has made and broken empires. There were many laughs, some dancing, and a whole lotta umami. Thanks to everyone who came. I had so much fun! And I’ll cherish the memories of the afternoon fondly ❤️ Pictures from the lovely @myriamtdr and the charming @roweeenn 📸 by @tampopofeasts
“To imagine that other aspects of the pala’s being, in which it enters history as a potent force and a protagonist in songs and stories, it becomes necessary to remember the nutmegs have a hidden side, which always eludes the eye. It is there that songs, poems, and stories reside. If this hemisphere withers, then the other too will eventually lose the meanings that give this tiny planet a place in the webs of life that sustain humanity.”  ~ Amitav Ghosh, ’The Nutmeg’s Curse’ For November’s Misery Medicine, we discussed how legacies and ongoing currents of climate colonialism oppress via disenchantment. After sharing our relationships to spices, we talked about how Western colonialism rejects the agency of nonhuman beings to turn them into profitable commodities. Put crudely, it’s easier to exploit those you don’t respect. A key part of this process, as shown by Amitav Ghosh, is the forcible removal of Indigenous peoples from their lands and the dismissal of their cultures — many of which revere various kinds of creatures through songs and myths. It’s not coincidental that caring for plants and animals is often seen as “whimsical,” and that whimsical is seen as cute, weak, or diminutive but!!! A whimsical recognition of the aliveness of all things can… ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ reclaim deep wisdoms ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ build a strategy for survival ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ plant a seed of rebellion The world! It is alive! Living! Plentiful! One last session until the spring! We have the joy of welcoming @tampopofeasts to the land❣️they will be hosting DELICIOUS COLLABORATIONS: CULTIVATING RADICAL ATTENTION WITH KIMCHI in the garden THIS SATURDAY 8 NOV 12-2PM *SPACES FOR THIS EVENT ARE NOW FULL* ~ What timelines and worlds could fermentation help us navigate? How can cultivating a radical attention help us taste-feel-think our way to delicious futures? Through hands-on kimchi making, we’ll attune to the very big, the very slow, and the very tiny – from global food systems and climate colonialism, to the worlds of Lactobacillus microbes. Participants will be invited to discuss the importance of rewriting food stories as we collaborate on our kimchi with fresh produce from the garden. Please bring a jar or tub for your kimchi, and a snack in case you get hungry! 🫙🧤🧄🍄‍🟫🫚🧅 ABOUT TAMPOPO FEASTS @tampopofeasts is a project bridging food, climate justice, and multispecies storytelling. “tampopo,” meaning dandelion, to centre the more-than-human and interspecies encounters. “feasts” meaning “several feasts” and “the act of feasting” – delight in abundance. 🎟️ FREE TICKETS LIVE ON OUR WEBSITE TUES AT 6PM. image credit @feralsayang graphic credit @kieron_boothe by @tampopofeasts
Some pictures from the event ‘Fermenting Futures,’ designed and ran in collaboration with the wonderful team at @esea.green.lions. Pics and zines from @chinyoen and @seung.sing <3 It was booked and busy! Once everyone was settled and the session introduced, kimchi-makers were invited to tune into the history of salt as we did a hands-on salting meditation. After a break, we made a delicious kimchi paste for our cucumbers. I made sure to have shiitake as an optional addition — my new favourite kimchi star. The slices get super juicy as they ferment! At the heart of this session were some of my fave questions: how can we approach our plates with reverence for the “ingredients” — not as commodities but as beings in themselves? How can we remember and respect the farmers that tended them? How can new stories and old wisdoms feed our growing hunger for other worlds? I’ll be running a version of this workshop in collaboration with another one of my favourite community hearts…watch this space! 𖡼𖤣𖥧𖡼𓋼𖤣𖥧𓋼𓍊𖡼𖤣𖥧𖡼𓋼𖤣𖥧𓋼𓍊𓍊𓋼𓍊𓋼𓍊𖡼𖤣𖥧 by @tampopofeasts
cn: food is delicious and also often violent When was the last time you really witnessed the food on your plate? Was it crispy, fluffy, bouncy? Candy-sweet or sour-sour? Hot, cold, annoyingly lukewarm? Where did you buy your food? Was it driven in from Kent or flown in from Peru? How many hands — whose hands — did these foodstuffs pass through? Do you think the plants had a hearty year of sunshine and rain? If you eat animals, what do you think the animal on your plate dreamt of? If food is the stuff of life, it’s also the stuff of death. Child labour, factory farming, rising farmer suicides, and the long present of colonial climate crises. More often than not, food production is inseparable from legacies of extractive colonial capitalism. Deeply personal, always political, food is both the most mundane and the most intimate of all multispecies encounters. tampopo feasts is a project trying to weave all of this together. “tampopo,” meaning dandelion, to centre the more-than-human and the many interspecies encounters. “feasts,” meaning “several feasts” and “the act of feasting,” meaning delight in abundance. Hope to see u soon <3 !! (*ᴗ͈ˬᴗ͈)ꕤ*.ﾟ by @tampopofeasts
