What will the state of Tamrielic society be in the years following the events of Skyrim?

Assuming that the Elder Scrolls VI takes place around 10-15 years after the last Dragonborn saved Nirn from the threats of Alduin, Lord Harkon and Miraak, the continent’s shifting political climate could create an intriguing backdrop for new adventures.

Here are my (pure head canon) predictions…

When earth is sundered, and skies choked black,
And sleepers serve the seven curses,
To the hearth there comes a stranger,
Journeyed far ‘neath moon and star.

Though stark-born to sire uncertain,
His aspect marks his certain fate.
Wicked stalk him, righteous curse him.
Prophets speak, but all deny.

Many trials make manifest
The stranger’s fate, the curses’ bane
Many touchstones try the stranger

Many fall,
but one remains.

Unraveling the mysteries of the Aurbis has drawn many a scholar into the depths of knowledge and the endless chasms of esoterica associated with the schools of magic. Whilst magic is something commonly practiced in Tamriel among hedge mages and witch covens, those seeking a more structured curriculum can apply to one of the many mage factions of Tamriel.

The founding organisation of magical study in the Empire was the Mage’s Guild. Founded by Vanus Galerion, the Guild once held Halls in most of Tamriel’s major holds for aspiring students to aspire and apply to. It was dissolved in the 4th Era and gave rise to two splinter groups based in Cyrodiil:

The Synod Mages act much in the same capacity as the Mage’s Guild once did, undertaking scholarly research and development of magical study under the oversight of the Elder Council. Unlike their predecessor, they do practice the same open door approach to applicants, nor do they share their knowledge as freely. In the wake of the Oblivion Crisis, they maintained the Mages Guild’s ban on Necromancy and heavily curtailed much of the practice of Conjuration magic.

The other splinter group that emerged from the dissolution was the College of Whispers, who played a key role in thwarting the Umbriel Crisis of the early 4th Era. Much of their research goes into the study of summoning Daedra and they are known to practice Necromancy as a means of advancing the study of Conjuration magic.

Both of these rival factions have at varying points attempted to form closer ties with the College of Winterhold in Skyrim, though the College’s stance of political neutrality in a wartorn region, this has not borne fruit. Founded by the ancient Nord Mage Shalidor, the College is an independent institution which accepts applicants freely. Distrust in mages is at an all time high in Skyrim with many blaming the College for the Great Collapse in which much of the ancient city of Winterhold perished into the sea, with the College itself remaining largely intact. by @tamrielwanderer

The Killing Word

Daedric artefacts seldom come without a price. The Ebony Blade carries a toll more demanding than most; it must taste the blood of deceit before its true potential is unlocked; a fitting tool for the Daedric Prince of Lies, Sex and Secrets.

Mephala herself is often portrayed with the likeness of a spider, spinning webs ensnaring her victims before sinking her fangs into their helpless bodies. Her webs are in reality less literal but both metaphorical and metaphysical. Lies are the means through which her followers ensnare their prey; weaving webs of seduction, coercion and manipulation. The power of words is enough to lure in a suitable subject before sinking in their fangs, with a killing word.

The Ebony Blade is a Dai-Katana formed of Ebony - the crystalline blood of Lorkhan. It is said that the blade was used to stab Trinimac in the back in his battle with her ally Boethiah in the time of the Chiner exodus. Khajiit mythology refers to this weapon as “The Black Edge of Shadow”, with Mephala revered as a Clan Mother of Secrets, a note of interest which ties into claims that she is the sibling of Hermaeus Mora.

The Blade was last seen in the 4th Era in Skyrim. It had come into possession of the Jarl of Whiterun who attempted to use the legendary Skyforge to destroy it, unsuccessfully. It is then said to have been used by the Last Dragonborn, who slaked its thirst for the blood of betrayal by murdering trusting followers.

In the northwest of Elsweyr rests the Rim Territories that border Cyrodiil, a land of steppes and grasslands that eventually give way to the canyons and badlands of Anequina. The Kingdom of Rimmen lays there named for the so called Rim-Men whose ancestry can be traced not just to the neighbouring Imperial province, but to the distant land of Akavir and its serpentine race of people, the Tsaesci.

In 2E 431, the Potentate Savrien Chorak was assassinated by the Morag Tong along with his heirs, bringing the Reman Dynasty to an end, with the scattered remnants of the Tsaesci and their Imperial retainers fleeing to Elsweyr to escape the persecution of the Warlord Attrebus, commencing an Interregnum period. The Khajiit granted their people refuge in the Rim-Territories where the settlement of Hakoshae, meaning “Valley Guard” was founded as a small community with cultural cross pollination of both Imperial and Akaviri culture. Though in truth, any Akaviri blood that could be found in the veins of the people who reside there would be diluted over many generations. Ethnically, the Rim-Men are Imperials of predominantly Nibenese stock, which can also be observed in their appearance and naming conventions, though some Rim-Men do maintain Akaviri forenames to honour their heritage.

Whilst it is likely that the Rim-men embrace the traditional Imperial Cult, another tenet of their culture is the reverence of their ancestors. The so called “Proving Festival” is another Akaviri custom that tasks the Rim-Men to honour their ancestry. They are required to show three “proofs” of Reverence, Strength and Wisdom. The rite is known to summon Akaviri spirits, such was the case in the festival of 2E 582 revealing the truth that the town’s founder was not Savrien Chorak’s son Beloren-Kaie, but his bodyguard Lein-Barduik who had impersonated him and founded the settlement.

By the turn of the 4th Era, the minor Kingdom seceded from the Elsweyr Confederacy with a seemingly hostile takeover. The new ruler crowned himself under the venerable title of Potentate.

Scamps are a goblin-like lesser Daedra commonly associated with mischief and are found in the service of numerous Daedric Princes. They have a cowardly nature and are most commonly deployed in numbers where they may overwhelm enemies rather than in single combat. Many scamps have some proficiency with destruction magic but are generally considered canon fodder and errand runners for the Lords they serve.

Seekers are the tentacled Daedra who reside within the Lovecraftian realm of Apocrypha, serving their master Hermaeus Mora. They are commonly observed browsing the many tomes of Mora’s realm, delving into his library’s esoteric knowledge. They are highly intelligent and seemingly skilled in both illusion magic and the use of sound to drain their enemies magicka and willpower.

Clannfears are a reptilian Daedra whose head bears a distinguishable bony crest. They are of limited intelligence on par with most animals and are often considered feral, but some possess the ability to speak. Their sharp claws and beak are used to tear their prey apart and they often hunt in packs. They can be found in service to the Daedric Prince Mehrunes Dagon and were prevalent during the Oblivion Crisis.

Xivalai bear a resemblance to Dremora and carry a similar level of intelligence and fervour into battle. They are effective warriors but also possess arcane prowess with many able to summon lesser Daedra of their own in their service in battle. Where they differ from Dremora is that Xivalai are often self serving and do not adhere to a caste system, often seeking their own personal glory. They are known to betray and defect from the service of Daedra Lords if they do not consider their treatment to be of a fair standard. They have been known to work with their Dremora brethren, but often view them with a level of contempt, seeing them as too brash and extreme.

(Spoilers for Infernal City and Lord of Souls)

The Mede Dynasty is nothing if not controversial. The events of the Oblivion crisis brought about an end to the long line of Septim Emperors, leaving a power vacuum in the Imperial Province.

Chancellor Ocato ruled the Empire as Potentate for a decade following Martin Septim’s death before his assassination at the hands of the Thalmor, commencing the seven year Stormcrown Interregnum. Power would be seized in 4E18 by a Nibenese mage known as Thules the Gibbering with the backing of a few corrupt members of the Elder Council. His weak grasp on power provided an opportunity for the Colovian Warlord Titus Mede to step in and take the throne, capturing the Imperial City with under a thousand men. By 4E 22, he is crowned Emperor Titus Mede I.

Sweeping reforms would follow - the corrupt Elder Council was dissolved and replaced, the breakaway kingdoms of Leyawiin, Bravil, Hammerfell and High Rock were brought back into the fold and the Blades were replaced by the Penitus Oculatus as the honour guards of the Emperor, sensing their waning loyalty to an Empire not ruled by divine mandate. The consolidation of power was paramount, with the “new” Empire set to face many obstacles on the horizon.

In 4E 48, Tamriel would face its greatest threat since the Oblivion Crisis, as the floating island of Umbriel emerged from Oblivion, casting its sinister shadow across Black Marsh, making its way north to the Heartlands. Titus Mede was able to co-ordinate a defence of Cyrodiil against the hordes of undead created by Umbriel’s shadow, with the crisis averted through the efforts of a Breton Alchemist Annaïg Hoïnart and his son and successor, Prince Attrebus Mede. The two would eventually marry, with Attrebus becoming the second Mede Emperor.

Conjuration isn’t simply the manifestation of a Daedric entity on Nirn, it requires transporting a lesser Daedra from Oblivion to the mortal realm. Even bound weapons like bows and daggers are technically sentient beings that are doing the bidding of a gifted summoner, though some conjured minions are easier to control than others.

Atronachs are golem like creatures that manifest from elemental energies like fire, frost and lightning. They are not allied to any one particular Daedric Prince and can be found in multiple planes of Oblivion.

The Daedroth is most commonly found in realms such as the Deadlands, the plane of Mehrunes Dagon. The term ‘Daedroth’ is actually the singular noun for ‘Daedra’, but typically refers to this crocodile like creature. Daedroth are fierce and are known to breathe fire in battle.

Hungers are an oddity most frequently found in service to Boethiah in the realm of Attribution’s Share, though they have also been known to serve other Princes such as Clavicus Vile, Sanguine snd Sheogorath in the Shivering Isles. They use their claws to attack enemies and have an elongated tongue used to drain their target of life essence. They are observed to spit poison and acid and are also said to hold a particular hunger for Elven females.

Dremora are the prized footsoldiers of many Daedric Princes and are fierce warriors organised into clans with a strict hierarchy. Though typically referring to themselves collectively as “Kyn”, Dremora come in various ranks such as Churls and Caitiffs who make up the soldier class, Kynreeves and Kynmarchers who hold the officer positions and the highest ranks of Valkynaz and Markynaz known as “warrior dukes”. Dremora are known for their admiration of strength and total distain for mortals whom they view as weak, though they are fiercely loyal to their chosen Lords of Oblivion.
