POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
My third episode on @kcrwmusic is live! This time we dive into the World Of Global Spiritual Jazz. I shared snippets of a much larger interview with author @betaworldpeace who just released his book, Comic Music: The Life, art, and Transcendence of Alice Coltrane.

We touched on Alice Coltrane’s legacy, what her story can teach us all about grief, and I share a brand new Remastered track off of the soon to be announced compilation from @lightintheatticrecords of visionary music from Mexico that will soon be announced soon. Press play to hear it first!

My jacket is from a local label called @ragreserve and it’s made of dead stock denim from Japan. I love it 🫶🏾 by @tanayonas

Spent 7 lovely hours selecting records to fill @devonojas’ ‘HiFi Pursuit Listening Room’, at @sfmoma as a part of their new exhibit ‘Art of Noise’. It was such a wonderful challenge for @samofsamofsam and I to select records that would make full use of this incredible hand built system and we’re so grateful for the opportunity. The room is open till early August and if you’re in SF, please make a stop. Each day is a different selector and Devon is also doing a series of dates.

Thank you so much @douglasdespres for the beautiful photos! 📸📸📸 by @tanayonas

🎤✨ Turkish funk found its SOUL in Esmeray — the Afro-Turkish queen who fused Anatolian psychedelia with Motown vibes! 🌍💥 Born in Istanbul ‘49, she broke barriers, faced prejudice, and turned pain into POWER through her music. Her 1976 hit “13.5”? A fearless anthem calling out racism in Turkey for the first time. Afro-Turkish history never sounded this funky! 🔥🖤 #Esmeray #TurkishFunk #AfroTurkish #vinylcollection #MusicHistory by @tanayonas

Psychedelic rock of South America is the theme of my next show on @kcrwmusic this Sunday from 8–10pm. One of my favorite pioneers of the scene is Vytas Brenner, who brought Venezuelan folk rhythms together with synthesizers, jazz and progressive rock to create a sound entirely his own.

Born in Germany to a family of Lithuanian heritage, Vytas and his brother Haakon came to Venezuela with their family in 1949, following the upheaval of World War II. Their mother, Margarita, was an opera singer, and music was part of their world from the beginning.

His 1973 debut, La Ofrenda de Vytas, is such a beautiful introduction to how he brought those different worlds together, and reflects this cross cultural moment that was makes waves on every corner of the globe :)

Tune in on Sunday on 89.9 FM or via the @kcrw app to learn more about Vytas and the incredible scenes of the ’60s and ’70s throughout the continent. by @tanayonas

Japanese Post Punk, New Wave, and Synth pop was an incredible scene in the late 70s and 80s and @insheepsclothinghifi hosted a deep dive into many of gems that defined those movements at @jaccc_la . It was so much fun to host this topic and here are a few of the records I brought to guide listeners into this fascinating corner or music history 🎶 🔊 taken in Japanese American Cultural & Community Center - JACCC by @tanayonas

Miharu Koshi’s Parallelisme was released in 1984 on YEN/Alfa, and is one of my favorite corners of Japanese Nee Wave. Produced by @houseofhosono , the record came just after Tutu and pushed their collaboration into an even stranger mix of synth-pop, new wave, chanson and electronic music. Koshi wrote nearly the entire album herself, with arrangements largely shared between her and Hosono.

@insheepsclothinghifi is hosting a listening TOMORROW at the stunning @jaccc_la garden to delve into this sound and We’ll listen to this and many more gems from the post punk/new wave scene along side The Plastics, Yasuaki Shimizu, Ippudo, and many many more. 𝘓𝘐𝘚𝘛𝘌𝘕𝘐𝘕𝘎 𝘗𝘈𝘙𝘛𝘠: On October 2nd, we head back into the ‘80s at @jaccc_la with “World of Japanese Synth-Pop, New Wave & Art Rock” featuring influential groups like The Plastics, who fused punk, synthesizers, sampling, and forward-thinking art-pop sensibilities for their own unique aesthetic, which was praised by Western contemporaries like Talking Heads, Devo, and The B-52s.

In 1979, Yellow Magic Orchestra took the world by storm with the release of their second album Solid State Survivor. As YMO traveled the world, other artists in Japan were also forging their own lanes within synth-pop and new wave including Ippu-do, Plastics, P-Model, Mariah, and others. Each of these groups drew from their own diverse set of influences ranging from world music, punk rock, techno-pop, and beyond. This listening session will focus on the expanding worlds of Japanese synth-pop, new wave, and art rock sounds from those groups, as well as their influence on later artists. Listening session and DJ set hosted by In Sheep’s Clothing’s own and @kcrwmusic resident Tana Yonas aka @passionfruit.wav + select Japanese beer, whiskey, and ramen by @sabakusessions

World of Japanese Synth-Pop, New Wave & Art Rock Listening Party is part of an ongoing collaborative listening series from JACCC and In Sheep’s Clothing. Tickets are available now ~ link in bio ~ taken in Japanese American Cultural & Community Center - JACCC by @tanayonas

My 2 hour Haruomi Hosono (@houseofhosono) deep dive on @kcrwmusic is live! Join me on a journey through the sublime world of Hosono, one of the most mythical and endlessly inventive figures in Japanese music. ✨

From the psychedelic folk of Apryl Fool and Happy End in the 60s Kyoto scene, to his beautifully strange solo records, Yellow Magic Orchestra, ambient experiments and tropical fantasies, we travel through more than five decades of music. I also play some of the artists he championed and a younger generation still deeply inspired by his sound.

Come wander through the musical universe of Haruomi Hosono with me. Now streaming on KCRW. 🌙 by @tanayonas

Tonight on @kcrwmusic from 8-10pm I’ll be doing a deep dive into the world of Haruomi Hosono (@houseofhosono ) ahead of his US Tour and his @kcrw Presents show at the iconic Greek Theatre next Sunday.

Hosono is one of my favorite figures in music, and much of his magic happened outside of the lime light. He helped cultivate the careers of many young Artists in Japan and Abroad and we’ll be doing a survey of it all. Can’t wait and see you there! by @tanayonas
