It's now been about a week since @sticking_place_books put out my translation of @cristianaastori's #allthatblack - so, here's a trailer showcasing the first chapter, which dramatizes the making of @soledadmirandaofficial and Jess Franco's #vampyroslesbos!

Two years and a day ago, my eternal buddy-in-arms-and-art Tim Lucas brought a 2011 giallo novel about nascent film scholar Susanna Marino and her connection to @soledadmirandaofficial, written by his longtime Facebook friend @cristianaastori, to my attention.

In the time since he made that post, a lot has happened.
A film by @bakermovies that pays extensive tribute to Soledad won the @festivaldecannes Palme d'Or and five @theacademy Oscars.
A snazzy 4K restoration of her most iconic movie was put out by @severinfilms.
Two of the many real-world people woven into the book's narrative, Antonio Simões - Soledad's only child - and Jack Taylor - who lifted her into Lucy's coffin in #cuadecucvampir - shuffled off this mortal coil (RIP).

And in the midst of all that, I translated Kri's book - the first time I'd ever done such work on a novel. Once I had a working draft ready, I searched high and low for a publisher until Paul Cronin of @sticking_place_books offered it a home. Then, @suspirialand came into our orbit and graced us with an absolutely beautiful cover. And to top it off, its launch date came on the heels of #worlddraculaday and coincided with the heavenly birthdays of #christopherlee and #brunonicolai.

Translating such a magical, twisty book like "All That Black" has been the adventure of a lifetime, one that I hope to sustain by eventually giving all of Susanna's adventures the same treatment. Kri and I are hoping that the work put into this edition allows it to finally reach an audience outside of Italy and capture the imagination of those who admire gialli, Jess Franco and especially Soledad herself (@horrornonna, @katellinger and @kierlajanisse, I especially think this novel might be your bag 😊). I literally crossed paths with @tanglefreak98 for thirty seconds on Saturday, September 19, whilst witnessing @charli.burrowes do her thing. And four days later, I both caught a ride and a film with him (and I got to meet @violetamethystbeth, too). Life is wild... ✨️🙌🖤

Three days of celebrating some very musical buddies!

- Thursday night: caught the opening night of @millennial.prod's production of #brianyorkey and #tomkitt's "Next To Normal", a genuinely harrowing tale of a family grappling with bipolar disorder and addiction. @_madelineharper and @conorensor, you and the rest of the cast held me through the ups and downs of the tale like a vice!
- Friday arvo: watched "Bloom", the latest incarnation of @just.iammaria's series of operatic autobiographical shows, this time being put on a part of a project for @griffithuniversity. No one belts it like you do, Marina, and your family's story is always a welcome addition to your music! (And make sure you eventually get your hands on @cristianaastori's book after I lent you my copy for the photo! 😆)
- Friday night: experienced @venusfromheaven's first live gig at @sugarbris. Seriously, @courtneywherrett, @eleanor.charlotte_, @rhiannahella and @annie_laverm, you are gonna make a name for yourselves - your dance routines are polished to a mirror's sheen, and your stage presence is absolutely electrifying! I think you're about to command quite the fanbase, and I can't wait to see how your next gigs turn out!
- Saturday night: drove all the way out to @tribe_clubhouse for friend-of-Venus @taneishavartiainen's first rock-out gig, accompanied by @burnoutbandau. You too have an awesome energy for the stage, Taneisha - if "Jealousy Looks Ugly" and "I Can't Help It" are how you inaugurate your career, things are sure to only be looking up for you! by @tanglefreak98

⭐️Today after months and months of reading, research, composing, writing, and brainstorming, I finally presented my performative exegesis! I am Maria! Bloom.

The voice so central in my research and my life finally vibrated in all its colours. 🌈

“If I were to offer any advice at all on anything, it would be to have the courage to put yourself out there because you never know how much your presence by itself can resonate with the people that you show up for.
This is especially true, I feel, in the art circle, whether it be in film, TV, or theatre, or anything like that.
I often get told when I go to a movie premiere or the opening night of a play, something along the lines of, “Oh, Patrick, we always love that you take time out of your schedule to come along to what we’re doing and that you laugh at all the right moments and that you come along in this vest with all these amazing pins.”
And the reason I come to shows with this vest and with these pins is because they are representative of a lot of the artists and actors, actresses, and characters whose work has resonated with me, and I always want to share what that fascination with their work and what they’re all about with other people so that it might influence or interest them in some way.
And the reason I feel it’s important to show up for other people is that you never know, again, how much your response to something can resonate. You never know how your response to something, whether it be in arts or even just something in the world in general, can resonate with the people who are putting it out there.
And you never know if that person that’s put out that work can actually become a friend or give something back to you in their own way.
And that idea of really being sincere in how you respond to a work or what people put out into the world has very much helped me. It’s gotten me employment in things, in various movie productions, and it’s gotten me my first two book deals. One is a translation of a book, and another is a series of interviews with a friend of mine who’s a critic.
So again, always be sincere in how you go out into the world and engage with it, and always believe that the mere act of showing up and being sincere with the people you show up for will have an impact, whether it’s just giving them a little boost in what they’re doing, or if it will lead to something that will be beneficial for you or them down the taken in Australia by @tanglefreak98

Patrick Moroney‘s Bio: Ever since he took in a double bill of Mario Bava’s “Black Sunday” and “Black Sabbath” at his local cinematheque, Patrick Moroney’s fascination with genre has only blossomed - as has his Blu-ray collection. An actor, writer and production crew member, he has appeared on-camera in such projects ranging from Netflix’s adaptation of one of his favourite novels, Trent Dalton’s “Boy Swallows Universe”, to Alex Cox’s last movie, “Dead Souls”. His translation of “All That Black”, Cristiana Astori’s giallo novel about Soledad Miranda and Jess Franco, was published earlier this year by Sticking Place Books, and he is currently editing a book-length series of interviews with Video Watchdog’s Tim Lucas.

This month, we’re celebrating “Satanic September”. Eager for October, and our spooky watches, today we’re getting a head start in sharing some of our favorite satanic film recommendations. These include films involving cults, demonic possessions, Faustian tales, witchcraft and other devilish films.👹
