POSTS STORIES REELS

Today @nts_radio // Music is not gonna change this impossible situation but I believe it’s one of the tools we have to resist, liberate, heal, and counterpose all of this darkness.

Today @nts_radio will re broadcast As I Was Moving Ahead // We Loved Each Other So Much.

It is a three-hours journey weaved as a love letter to Beirut, Lebanon, Fairuz, and all interconnected threads.

Weaved into this letter many people I love:
Fairuz and the Rabhani family’s songs and interviews, sounds of Sabah, Robert Maalouf, Baligh Hamid, Omar Khorshid, my father Tony Benn Feghaly, Nagat Al Saghira, and others for the first and second hour.

In the third hour, a tapestry of underground sounds from Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, and Palestine with Soapkills, Sanam, Nancy Mounir, Yasmine Hamdan, Zeid Hamdan, Charbel Haber, Dirar Kalash, and others.

Spoken words by me featuring translations of Fairuz songs, field recordings of Beirut and Bethlehem by Yasmine Hamdan, Charbel Haber, Elias Anastas, and experimental guitars by Dirar Kalash.

A special thanks to Clayton Vomero and Amar Ediriwira for inviting me to pencil this soundscape on the occasion of the screening of We Loved Each Other So Much, a wonderful documentary about Fairuz and Beirut, directed by Jack Janseen
In the next days a funding for Lebanon will be launched via this project.

Stay tuned. Much love. by @taniaeffe

Grateful to @nycwjf for having me and for this uplifting collaboration.

If you say ‘A Love Supreme,’ that’s what I hear first, every time. It’s like a beautiful city, but we don’t enter, because we have to go through the portals, the corridor, and then we reach the entranceway. When that chord hits, that E major, the doors start to open. That’s what it’s like for me - the very first invitation to this beautiful place that’s here, that’s in our heart and spirit.”

Roads to Sintīr ~ First look at the work in progress

Roads to Sintīr is a long-term film and sound research project by Tania Feghali, following the traces of what she describes as an “endless sound”: a drone sound that keeps resurfacing across different forms, instruments, and geographies, while being profoundly and subtly connected to a place in us that remains untouched across time and space.

The first phase of this research was initiated within the framework of Shluq – Moving Archives, a project by Chullu Agency in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Tunis.

The sintīr, a skin-covered bass lute taking different names and shapes across latitudes, becomes a metaphor for this quest. Its name carries another resonance: sintīr, sentir, sentire- to feel, to perceive, to connect with something at its core.

Unfolding from Tunisia, the first phase of the research moves through vernacular and pastoral traditions, Amazigh and Sufi practices, oral transmission, landscapes, and encounters with musicians. Working alongside Yacine Boularès, improvisation is at the core of this research: different stories, sounds and instruments coming together through the same urge, allowing a language to emerge that needs no translation.

Presented at JAOU as the first public manifestation of this research, moving image, field recordings, and glimpses of an evolving film form a temporary constellation, unfolding throughout the evening alongside live improvisation and conversation.

“We’re vessels that the spirit goes through, and that’s how we make music.
We pick from some world, some dimension, and we have to train, as musicians, to let this dimension flow as free as possible through our body”

My journey filming in Sardinia with Luca @twothouuu was not short of adventures, as within so without: Uranously full of surprises, natural disasters, not-so-legal incursions hehe, closed roads, obstacles, but also places I had researched and mapped from afar before arriving, that stunned me in the flesh in ways I didn’t expect - magical misty millenary trees, temples made by the Pharaohs’ guardians, salt deserts, musical shells, goats, cinghiali and turtles, flutes made from sugar cane only harvested under the full moon…

And this album: it’s going to make you wanna dance, believe me. Deep, thick, spiritual, improvisational jazz meets Detroit with @twothouuu @theon_cross @__d_monk @taymourkhajah @division81 ‘Watch the Change’

Dšrt (from ancient Egyptian red - not abandoned) by some strange mathematics of sound and phonetic coincidence, both words ended up sounding like “de-sh-ret” and “de-z-er-ta” while describing the same kind of geographic space yet expressing profoundly different points of view and relationships to the land.

Making space for the desert ~ bringing some desert joy into September from a set I did at @thelotradio and particularly cherish, following an invitation from @piquenique.nyc on a snowy Martin Luther King Day in New York.
For me this set carries the electrifying joy of simply being in the desert, fullly present and open to listen to what is there and being offered another way of seeing.

Intro: The Dream - from Watch the Change, a mini-documentary by Tania Feghali

Earlier this February, Tania @taniaeffe visited me in Sardinia to hear and film the story about the genesis of Oraculu, and observe the background and nature that inform my music. The result is a mini-documentary about the physical and metaphysical places we visited, and the deep exchanges we had around music, dreams, poetry, turtles, Temples of Babai, higher planes, life and nature. You can get a taste of the intro here, and the full version is linked in our bio.

“Last winter I had one of the most intense dreams ever: a river was flowing through my land.”
