Summer #37 We ran through fountains hand in hand, spent time in deep meditation on firetrucks, bulldozers, excavators, front loaders, dump trucks, buses, cranes, road rollers, wrecking balls, water coolers and tractors, dipped in Sayulita seas, healed in Santa Fe dry heat, bowled $2 games at the Dondee Lanes, reveled in west LA fireworks from the driveway, Rob captained the chicken booth fundraiser at the Venice Buddhist Temple Obon with fierce devotion, late night gardening chats about California native plants, we closed PDA with reverence for everyone who held us down, hand roll nights and birthday celebrations.

The Fall equinox was my mothers favorite day of the year. In feng shui, fall energy turns from active yang into reflective yin as the days grow shorter and darker. This represents completion, which is connected to metal, joy, and rest after hard work and sowing.

Summer #36. We moved to LA in June after 15 brilliant years of NYC. PDA is still rocking and we’re grateful for everyone that keeps her strong and busy. We’re adjusting to stroller walks in our new beachy suburb and dad’s daily philosophical musings on home maintenance and grandfatherhood. Plus some Michigan hikes hoops and bbqs, Brown family reunion spades tournaments, and Tchaikovsky’s fourth at the Bowl.

We are enjoying lending a hand and being of service in our new neighborhood. Gardening, cooking, parenting, volunteering, praying, play dating, coaching, participating. The Buddhists call it, “joyous effort,” as these acts invite us to experience true reality.

Kudos to everyone who is trying to focus on and appreciate what’s right in front of them and water it daily. Sometimes stillness is the move! Your attention is the greatest gift! And happy first birthday to Aiko, who reminds me that we are deeply worthy of receiving life’s greatest blessings!!! taken in Venice Hongwanji Buddhist Temple by @tanibrown

Welcome Aiko Brown Guimond, 8/31/24.

I hope you’re a deep listener and an ace chef like your father. Unconditionally kind and generous like your grandmothers. Imaginative and loyal like your grandfathers. Free and fun loving with a quick jumper like your aunt. But most importantly, that you become whatever and whoever makes you happy.

We can’t wait to teach you to write thank you cards, ferment dough, enjoy the seasons, and raise you up. You are our everything, everywhere, all at once, forever beloved son.

Summer #34 camping and floating the Yellowstone River with Cheryl and Cody. Watching Miles and Walker and Gideon and Frankie and Elliot and Poppy grow up joyfully. Dipping in Lake Como and sunrise at the Duomo. Block parties in Brooklyn and Dodgers Mets in Queens. Public displays of affection with close family and friends. “Watching you grow reminds me everything has a natural progression,” Mom said. Being outside outside and returning again and again to what’s essential and worthy. taken in Outside by @tanibrown

Squad for @khiryofficial’s newest campaign Fight for Love! @jameelkhiry captured some real essence. Yin and Yang. Ebullient and steady. Yooper and Angelino. I giggled when I saw the picture. It’s very honest. Me waxing poetic minutiae and Rob listening with endearment and day dreaming about rabiola and broccoli stem soup in winter time. I look wildly like Janet did in her thirties. And Khiry’s jewelry drips Afro-futurism. Thank you for sharing your lens Jameel, you are such a boundless talent and we’re honored to be featured with your creations. Support artists. Buy local. Especially your friends. Especially Black fine art. They even gave me a custom discount link. It’s in my profile. Cop before he’s in the MET. Congrats @khiryofficial and thank you for showing us as we are. www.khiry.com. taken in Brooklyn, New York by @tanibrown

I quietly transitioned from Jopwell at the end of 2021 (with love and appreciation for what we continue to build), and took time to recenter and rest after a 7-year climb—shout out to mom’s golden rule.

Last Spring, I had the opportunity to join a climate technology venture capital firm (MUUS) who bet on me to bring my experience and skillsets in DEI & Platform to climate.

Yesterday, by virtue of the team’s efforts, I was invited to the White House to celebrate the historic Inflation Reduction Act with President Biden, Vice President Harris, and other climate trailblazers like Senator Ed Markey, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and John Doerr. My grandfather Willie Lee Brown made his way to DC alone via a one-way ticket when he was 16 years old! He wished to end the brutal realities of South Carolina sharecropping and worked as a cement mason building the tunnels for Washington’s transit system, maximizing his evolution. It is not lost on me that we are the highest spiritual and moral manifestations of our family’s sacrifices and I spent the day in magnificent reflection with him.

I am new to climate investing and will do my best to unpack its complicated solutions while intensifying considerations for what the sector calls “first-line communities,” or those that will experience FIRST and WORST climate consequences. The IRA has made a lot noise but my quick breakdown says:

1. The bill shifts climate innovation to the federal tax base to make the energy transition cheaper and faster.

2. It ensures we make this stuff in the US. Particularly wind, solar, batteries, and critical minerals. Cue private sector venture.

3. It targets 40% emissions reduction by 2030 with an unprecedented $370B Federal commitment.

4. It assigns $2.8B in environmental and climate justice block grants for community-based nonprofits and other eligible partners (this will fuel an entirely new genre of environmental equity planning!).

The bill is not without its criticisms and I warmly welcome the discourse as we all get up the curve. Best birthday ever. Thank you, Willie Lee Brown. by @tanibrown

Summer #33. Sunset walks with my godmother on my late mothers birthday and BBQs with homemade kraut and games and orange wine on Dean St. Showing up for Kimmie and Alex, Ryan and Yas, Robin and Claire, Nadia and Alberto to make life-long commitments. Getting showered with bridal tea parties and bachelorette horse races and boat rides and brass bands and raves. New jobs and pending nuptials. With the most beautiful and generous friends and family. A high frequency joy. A wild and precious life. taken in Venice Hongwanji Buddhist Temple by @tanibrown

Happy Birthday, Juanita!

Mom put notes in my backpack every day. And for every big milestone she’d take the time to write me a long, detailed, reflective letter. She enjoyed evolving and the natural world, found art in everything (especially when others laughed, she sincerely took everyone seriously and thought that if you had any creative idea or expression it was valid and valuable!), was an extraordinary visual artist, and believed that being present and compassionate were the most important gifts one could give others.

She loved me so specifically and creatively and unconditionally, and I find great honor and purpose in knowing I’m her daughter. Her depth was limitless and I’ve grown to appreciate that I’m still getting to know her and delight in her and learn from her from afar.

Happy birthday, Mom, until we meet again. “Respect those that love you, for life is short, and every moment is a miracle.” by @tanibrown
