Brick Saga // oneof3.

There are few things in life as delightful as LEGO bricks. In this 3-part series, let's attempt to explore and visualize the basics of the injection molding process responsible for billions of pieces every year.

The iconic 2x4 brick is produced from a straight-pull mold, with the molten plastic introduced via a hot runner system. This allows for ready-to-use bricks that are easily ejected without any gates or sprues to worry about. The injection point is left fairly clean and requires no further treatment, from a usability perspective.

And while this system is considerably more expensive than its cold runner counterpart, the time and material saved allows LEGO to churn out billions of bricks that provide a consistent and rewarding user experience.

There are tons of resources for LEGO bricks that can provide far more valuable information than what I do. But, do make sure to check out Bill Hammack's YouTube video on injection molding for some beautiful explanations. by @tanmayjoshi

🔨 Hammertime! Can't touch this.

Decided to go with desaturated colour compositions, and challenged myself to come up with 3 variations that conveyed distinctly unique moods for the exact same concepts.

Been distracted lately, so decided to take up last week's #weeklydesignchallenge and push myself to focus on alternate ways of presentation.

Bottles | Swipe ⬅️➡️ Figured I'd try my hand at the #weeklydesignchallenge, and sketch some random water bottles.

Also, I wanted to try out the continuous scrolling feature that I've seen other designers explore. by @tanmayjoshi

Siphon Coffee Maker Concept.

I'm not a big coffee person, but oh man! I'm absolutely fascinated by siphon brewing! The whole process is ridiculously cool, and I love KitchenAid's take on it. With that as my inspiration, I went for a design language where the CMF and form factor reflect the modern minimalist sensibilities.

I'd love to see this made, with a balance between its glass, ceramic, wood and steel components. by @tanmayjoshi

We Sketch to Communicate.

Here you have my injection molding considerations for a Battery Charger I developed for the Troy-Bilt line.

As Industrial Designers, we sketch. A lot! And while, most designers that I've been around do consider broader technical aspects, only a few of them think about DFM (Design for Manufacturability) details, and fewer still sketch it out to help inform their decisions for refinement.

Being a Mechanical Engineer, I've always given these details a fair consideration, but never really merged it with design sketching. Fortunately for me, the very talented @hunterbase was around to show me the way, during my internship.

Design sketching for #DFM is quite an enlightening, iterative process. Give it a try! taken in Chicago, Illinois by @tanmayjoshi

Warm-up 002 | More rectilinear volumes.

I think I'm going to keep posting my warm up sketches as its own series, in addition to all my concept & polished work. What do you folks think? taken in Chicago, Illinois by @tanmayjoshi

Got GARMIN on my mind! Here are just a few concepts I sketched, where I tried to implement the visual brand language for #garminfenix series. There's more coming!

Fun fact: This is my first, full fledged attempt at Sketchbook Pro. Just trying to teach myself new tools! 🙂 taken in Chicago, Illinois by @tanmayjoshi

As the first month of 2017 draws to a close, I'm back at it!!
Rectilinear forms are a great way (and the easiest) to shake off those cobwebs.

Now, let's get started! taken in Chicago, Illinois by @tanmayjoshi

TBT... 2 States of Communication.

One last image from a while back. Haven't been posting here at all lately. Look for greater activity here in 2017!

Them details! Despite the zoom feature now present on Instagram, the details are quite often lost.

So, here's a closer look at the part that I enjoyed working on the most. From the water inside, and the internal mechanisms to the molding details like ribs and bosses added in.

I had fun! I should do more translucent materials. taken in Tempe, Arizona by @tanmayjoshi
