There is something sacred about knowing where your food comes from.

Sourcing locally isn’t just about freshness—it’s about honoring the hands that rise before dawn, care for the land and water, and preserve generations of knowledge. Every local ingredient carries the story of a community.

African American fishermen have long been part of that story. From the coastal waters of the Carolinas and the Gulf Coast to the Chesapeake Bay, Black fishing communities have helped feed families, sustain local economies, and preserve traditions passed down through generations. Despite facing barriers throughout history, their contributions have shaped America’s seafood culture in ways that deserve recognition.

As a chef, choosing local is my way of investing in people, protecting tradition, and serving food with purpose. Every meal becomes more than something we eat—it becomes a way to honor those who came before us and those who continue the work today.

From My Heart to Yours. @womenforchangesa

As many of you know, my heart has always extended beyond the table. Food has simply been the way I’ve learned to love people.

Today, I’m honored to announce Women For Change as Chef Tannya’s 2026 charity focus.

This incredible South African organization is working to end gender-based violence and femicide while supporting survivors and advocating for lasting change.

South Africa continues to face one of the highest femicide rates in the world. Women, daughters, mothers, sisters, and friends are losing their lives simply because they are women—and I cannot look away.

This year, a portion of Chef Tannya’s charitable giving and fundraising efforts will support organizations fighting for the safety, dignity, and future of women.

Because true hospitality isn’t just about feeding people.

It’s about protecting life.
It’s about restoring dignity.
It’s about standing beside those whose voices deserve to be heard.
