✨ half city (out now) & cursed city (out sept 29th) review ⚔️

i am starting a rumor that kate golden single-handedly revived urban fantasy with half city and cursed city. because she did and everyone needs to know about it.

half city follows vivienne abbott, a rare type of demon hunter, who is approached by reid graveheart, an instructor at harker academy for deviant defenses. what begins as an opportunity to learn more about the demon world and hone her craft, quickly becomes more complicated when viv realizes the academy may be connected to her father’s death. a death she unfortunately witnessed firsthand and continues to haunt her.

cursed city begins right where half city leaves off. with someone gone missing in half city, viv will do anything to find them, including venturing into the darkest parts of astera’s seedy underbelly with the questionable company of deacon graveheart. very quickly, i began to question so much of what was introduced in half city. however, many of the revelations and plot twists made me want to smack myself over the head for not noticing or questioning it sooner. because none of it felt out-of-the-blue and was hinted at just enough to make readers feel so distraught once things are slowly revealed. with that being said, cursed city definitely expands viv’s world in ways that are unexpected, dangerous, and completely addictive.

the witty banter as well as the amazing found family and romantic dynamics made me feel so insatiable when reading both books. the world building is also so vivid and thoughtfully constructed that i genuinely find myself wishing it existed. it feels so cruel that i cannot accidentally come across an ancient coin, that fits perfectly into a broken ticket machine, and end up at a lecture hall just in time for underworld studies with professor lisette.

it’s been a while since i have posted anything that isn’t a reel so i thought i could break the pattern with a small photo dump of what i have been up to for the past couple of months! enjoy :)

thank you @atriabooks for the pictured physical arc!!!

i moved back to my hometown mid-may and have taken up walks in the evening where i’ll bring my kindle and read, and wow the sunsets i have seen!!!

could i interest you in an age gap romance that explores topics of economics, politics, rough s*x, and grief and loss?

i knew i would be reading this book after ali hazelwood, the queen, the legend, the writer of problematic summer romance, said this was a love story like any other. it’s been one of my newest obsessions since finishing it in july.

thank you @williammorrowbooks for the finish copy!

more sunsets.

unbound!!! hi b+p !!!

i genuinely need any and all negative reviews of undone to be kept far far away from me. i have been so excited for undone and patiently waiting to read about toren and lily (and holden) and i refuse to let anyone ruin it for me. i am so excited for release day!!!

another sunset, of course.

navaratri is an indian festival that started last week and lasts for three consecutive weekends! i haven’t been to any events for many years due to school, but have been happily taking advantage of it this year.

have you met my good personal friends ophelia winters and alex corbeau-green??? i am personally very happy with my decision of waiting until daybreak was out to read this series. it was so fun!

another photo from navaratri :)

physical book tbr: arc edition

i have been allergic to reading books if i cannot read it on my kindle. however, it is officially fantasy fall and i have been itching to get lost in some new worlds, meaning i plan to pick up these physical books soon.

merciless (gifted by @harpervoyagerus)
⇢ sequel to vesselless. i have not read the first book myself, but it was such a big tiktok sensation that i am excited to dive into the series.

the sweetest fiend (gifted by @avonbooks)
⇢ i am the biggest raven kennedy fan. i cannot tell you the amount of times the plated prisoner series made me sob. i know she’s about to drag me through the trenches again, but baby i am so willing and ready this time!!!

kiss of the black flame (gifted by @atriabooks)
⇢ the legends of thezmarr series revitalized me when i was losing hope of coming across any good fantasy books in the genre two years ago. so, i am excited to read a new series written by helen.

sinister (gifted by @atriabooks)
⇢ i plan to keep this on my tbr until i can get around to reading fairydale first, which is her most popular book. regardless, i am hoping i’ll discover a new author that i love!

this is a little different from my usual content, and i am also using multiple captions for the first time and i feel so fancy. i have been currently enjoying the books i am picking up and very much looking forward to my tbr for this month so i might continue to share some mini reviews/thoughts as i go like this.

better than revenge
⇢ perfect for those who love black cat x golden retriever, fake dating, and ex’s rival.
⇢ my rating is sitting at 3.75 stars. this book was extremely entertaining and fast paced, with lots of good banter. however, the last 100 pages did feel slightly underdeveloped and rushed to me. given the amount of back and forth between the main characters in the end, i would have preferred less of that and more character growth from dani. while i never want dani to be anything other than a black cat, some of the harsher things she says deserved more meaningful apologies to the people she hurt. with that being said, i would still recommend giving this a try!

the circle
⇢ wow, this is so so addicting. i am currently at 83% and it is all that i am living and breathing for.
⇢ this book starts off strong with nova stalking her former childhood best friend’s social media account (on a burner account of course), finding out she joined the circle (a cult?), and proceeding to also join to knock some sense into her ex-friend.
⇢ i have never been more entertained and it keeps getting better with each chapter. so much of this book is written with a humorous undertone. there are many modern references mentioned, which in some books makes me cringe, but is so well-done here that i just laugh. as a girl who loves to theorize, i am surprised to say i have no theories so far since this is different from anything i have read before. i am just letting the story take me where it wants and loving every second of it.
⇢ i will admit i needed something to combat my withdrawal from games. while the delivery and plot of this book is different from games, it is doing the trick.

ok, listen to me!!! this was simply phenomenal. as a second-chance & marriage-in-crisis romance fanatic, this is second chance romance written at its best with an amazing twist.

i knew i would love molly and aster’s relationship from the very beginning, when aster storms into the hospital demanding to know where his wife is. i was immediately drawn to these characters, knowing that the journey they would have to take to reconnect and rediscover each other after molly loses six years (!!!) of her memories would be rocky and gut-wrenching. the last that molly remembers is aster used to be her academic rival and someone she could not stand.

aster staying devoted to molly and helping her through her recovery was so beautiful and brought me to tears on several, several occasions. i just love how he slowly reveals their shared history to not completely overwhelm her. with how deep his love runs for her and the restraint and effort he puts in day after day, it was very much giving “i will love you in every lifetime.”

tropes
🛋️ rivals to lovers
🛋️ forced proximity
🛋️ slow burn
🛋️ yearning (so much yearning)
🛋️ found family
🛋️ second-chance romance
🛋️ memory loss
🛋️ there’s only one bed and he takes the sofa like a boring, sensible man

a huge thank you avon for the physical arc copy @avonbooks by @tanvislibrary

storm of secrets and sorrow by @melissa_k_roehrich

happy release day! this is the second installment in the legacy series and traditionally published as of today!

thank you to @kensingtoncreatorhq @kensingtonbooks for having me be apart of the legacy keepers and sending me a beautiful arc that i will forever treasure (kind of how razik treasures his bowls) (hope someone is nerdy enough to get this reference)

melissa is hands-down my favorite fantasy author and i have adored anything she has put on paper. someone would have to hold a dagger to my throat to get me to admit my favorite book in the legacy series BUT i do hold storm of secrets and sorrow close to my heart. as someone who read the lady of darkness series first, i love how melissa took previous lore, twisted it, and gave us devram. she also drops an insane amount of banter, chemistry, and found family in book 2 that had me running around like a chicken with its head cut off. the legacy series is my comfort series, and theon, luka, and tessa will forever be everything to me.

disclaimer: i did, in fact, steal luka. he is, in fact, the photographed dragon and i will not be returning him!!! please respect our privacy at this time. by @tanvislibrary

west of forever 🌾

i officially have a new cowboy romance series to recommend! i have talked about west of forever more times than i can count, but here is my formal review.

tristan and lark are neighbors, but their families have also been rivals for generations. with every generation, the feud has only grown more complicated, and it’s safe to say their families cannot stand each other. to make matters worse, someone has been mysteriously vandalizing both of their ranches, adding another layer of tension to an already messy situation.

despite all of that, tristan and lark can’t seem to stay away from each other. their growing attraction leads to secret rendezvous and plenty of rule breaking, which is reminiscent of romeo and juliet but the ending is much happier (i promise)!!!

this book had me hooked from the very first chapter. tristan’s sense of humor completely won me over, but y’all, he’s also a single dad. his relationship with his daughter was so heartwarming, and the chemistry between him and lark was effortless, full of banter, and had me smiling and laughing the entire time.

tropes
🐎 cowboy x cowgirl
🌿 rival families
🐎 grumpy x sunshine
🌿 small town
🐎 single dad
🌿 mutual pining
🐎 forbidden romance by @tanvislibrary

I LOVED TRISTANLARK SOOOO MUCH 😭 i buddy read this with @tanvislibrary and I had so much fun!

Tristan and Lark were everything and more. The tension and pining between the two had me crashing out on every page. The banter was some of the best I’ve ever read as well 🙂‍↕️ Seeing Tristan and Lark’s separate personalities and their own family dynamics was so beautiful to see as well, I LOVE ALL THE CHARACTERS 😭😭 this book is exactly what I love in a small town romance, can’t wait for book 2 🤭 by @tanvislibrary

help a girl out: in need of cowboy romance recommendations 🤠✨

📖 currently reading: between the pines
- 58% in and currently leaning toward 3.5 stars since the conflict keeping the mmc and fmc apart is beginning to feel a little juvenile for my taste

🐎 recent cowboy romance reads:
- cowboy casual
- west of forever (my buddy read with @sadsreads is what jump-started my kick)

🌾 cowboy romances i have already read:
- chestnut springs
- rose hill
- rebel blue ranch
- silver pines ranch

🧲 not looking to read right now:
- anything by elsie silver (need a change of scenery)
- small town smokeshow (saving for later)

💋 series i have heard about but need to be influenced into (or out of):
- lucky river ranch
- wells ranch
- the bourbon boys

and of course, if you have a favorite that is not on my radar, please send it my way. i am ready to be emotionally attached to another cowboy. yee-haw. by @tanvislibrary

went to the doctor and she said i was fine… 💐🪩✨had to join this trend because it is so me

unfortunately, one thing i have never managed to not do is cry over books about mental health, feelings of loneliness, mentions of grief and loss, missed opportunities between characters, and found families who would quite literally sacrifice themselves for each other. so, naturally, i spend a concerning amount of time crying over most books.

and then i turn around, give them five stars, and recommend them to everyone i know! by @tanvislibrary
