World meet Glottosaurus!

Glotto meaning “tongue” is the word I’ve used as the text for my kinetic sculpture. The letters for Tongue in English, ज़ुबान in Hindi and നാക്ക് Malayalam are spread across and turn imitating the way a tongue might articulate the sounds in a mouth. These are also three of the languages I balance as a speaker, reader and writer with varying levels of fluency.

The type designer in me always wants to work with metal. I couldn’t cast type so here I am casting shadows with my metal type. The reptilian quality on its spine as it suspends brings the saurus.

It’s on view at @xxl.gallery till February. Come by and see it move in person by @tanyatypes

बॉम्बे स्वीट शॉप : Script Adaptation

Early in the lockdown I was working on small personal projects interpreting logos in Devnagri to keep my mind busy from all the uncertainties. Bombay Sweet Shop had opened earlier that year with a mazedaar logo that combined the best of old school indulgent maximalism very sleekly interpreted in an Art Deco style, proved a worthy challenge. The English logo had the words shaped in three separate boxes with varying sizes had me juggling with perspective and proportions for its Marathi counterpart.

So when @pleaseseeus who had designed the delicious English logo reached out to use the Devanagari version I drew, I was over the moon! I cleaned it up a bit and the end result is a beautiful sign that lives outside the @bombaysweetshop Byculla shop.

Shot by @aashim who makes all signs look lovelier.

Empress Court: Signage Design ✨

Last year I got to be part of a special project that merged my love for signage and working with archival material. @artdecomumbai got me on board this project with a unique brief to restore the sign for Empress Court to its original design from 1936.

Thanks to archival photographs courtesy of ADMT and meticulous planning and measurements from the team, I got to re-create the design that now over looks the Oval maidan. Empress Court is a prominent part of the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and I am thrilled to have played a small part in its typographic revival.

Extremely delighted to have @aashim photograph this beauty in all its glory one fine “Bombay Winter” morning.

How do the tools at our disposal change how we write and read? What is so special about Helvetica? Who was RK Joshi and what’s his legacy? And, crucially, has Comic Sans been misunderstood all of its life?

In the Episode 2 of the Croma Unboxed Podcast, we had many questions for Mumbai-based typographer and type designer Tanya George (@tanyatypes ) — who leads the popular Type Walks around the city — about the history of printing technology and font evolution, India’s type histories, how screens and the internet changed typography (or didn’t), what makes a typeface feel trustworthy or luxurious, and what happens to hand-painted lettering as the city changes.

Tanya trained at the JJ School of Art and holds an MA in Typeface Design from the University of Reading. She designs letterforms for brand identities and fonts across Indian scripts, writes about type, and is a docent for the Letterform Archive. Since 2018 she has also led Typewalks through Mumbai’s heritage districts, teaching people to read the city’s signboards.

The Croma Unboxed Podcast is about technology at the intersection of culture and society, and the lives it shapes. In every episode, we find the story hiding behind the technology few notice. Plug in.

✍️ 🅰 This lecture celebrates the human hands, imagination, and traditional skills behind the signs that shape our everyday surroundings.

About the Lecture

Every painted form, wooden letter, and design carries the identity of its maker and is made to measure for the space it inhabits.

The signs we often pass without noticing are more than advertisements—they are expressions of local culture, creativity, and craftsmanship. Through the stories of sign-makers and craftspeople, we discover how patience, practice, and personal artistry transform simple materials into meaningful visual landmarks.

At its heart, the talk is about recognising the people behind the things we see every day and to highlight the labour that goes into making signs and skills that are slowly disappearing. As digital technology and mass-produced printing replace many handmade practices, the work of traditional sign-makers reminds us of the value of human touch and individuality.

Their stories connect craft with community, showing that ordinary streets can hold extraordinary histories when we take the time to look closely and listen to the people who create them.

About the Speaker

Tanya George (@tanyatypes) is a designer of Sorts. She loves reading, writing, pointing at, and making letterforms. She draws letterforms digitally for fonts and identities but also makes them out of paper and metal for her artworks and designs across the many scripts she can read and some that she wishes she could. She also runs @mumbai_typostammtisch

What connects a 1930s type specimen to a student’s assignment from the 1950s? A century-old oral hygiene brand from Germany!

Spanning stylistic and topical boundaries, Letterform Archive’s collection often invites unexpected and evocative connections. Seen Together is a new blog series featuring our favorite object pairings—works that may come from very different times and places, yet sit next to each other in dialogue on a tour table.
