Some random photos taken around the Barbican Estate last year. Which one is your fave? All photos shot on the Lumix FS62 pocket camera (black and white mode), thankyou @london6x6 for the use of this great little camera. The Barbican estate is an icon of Brutalist architecture. Architects, Chamberlin, Powell and Bon, seized the opportunity to propose a radical transformation of how we live in buildings and cities.

 The result is one of London’s most ambitious and unique architectural achievements: a city within a city that is raised above street level and draws on a rich palette of references, from ancient Roman fortresses and French Modernism to Mediterranean holidays and Scandinavian design.

 Home to some 4,000 residents across 2,000 flats, organised around schools, a church, a library, an artificial lake, conservatory and an entire arts centre, no detail was left unconsidered, from the top of the 40 storey towers to the basement theatre and cinemas.
  
In 2001 the entire complex received Grade II listed status. Going up! Chapter London Bridge will be a 39-storey, 453 ft. (138-metre) tower mixed-used flagship Chapter Living development for Greystar. It will deliver 905 student bedrooms with a mix of studios, 2-bed and 3-bed apartments. A food and beverage commercial unit and flexible event spaces. Cycle parking, co-working lounges, meeting rooms, laundry, private kitchenette, study spaces, a gym, a screening room a landscaped terrace and a rooftop bar are all part of the myriad of amenity areas accessible to the students. Internally, windows are the principal architectural feature of each student room. Expressed externally through an arrangement of three-dimensional bays, the students’ windows create an abstracted fractal surface, the faceted façade evoking the play of sunlight on water. This facade uses repeatable components to minimise the number of unique fabrication forms. Best practice environmental performance standards are incorporated which contribute to an economic and socially sustainable community. A lightweight construction around a central core will enable reconfiguration at a future date. This means that the project could be adapted for different residential or hotel uses (or a mixture of both). Services throughout the building also allow for ease of refurbishment, including changes to room size and configuration. Adaptability to future requirements will extend the lifecycle of the building. Lightweight construction and limited fixed furniture will enable the social, study and wellness spaces at 1st, 37th and 38th floor to be programmed with flexibility in mind. These spaces will adapt with the changing needs of the residents over time. Chapter London Bridge contributes to the public realm, creating a rich urban environment developed through consultation with local residents, groups and businesses. At ground level, the building is set back to provide more space for pedestrians. Active frontages ensure that the new building participates in the life of the area, bringing 24-hour activity.
