Join us for “Why History?”📜

This Wednesday, October 14, after the 7:30 PM performance of Conscience, Taproot will be hosting Dr. Becky Hughes and Dr. Alissa Walter for a thought-provoking talk-back about the importance of teaching and learning from history. Meet our speakers below:

Dr. Becky Hughes taught history at Seattle Pacific University for 15 years before retiring last year. Her specialties are European and African history, and she has published numerous articles on British missionaries in Africa. She led the study abroad program, “The Holocaust in Prague,” multiple times and has a forthcoming chapter on teaching the Holocaust. She is currently researching the history of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Seattle and its pioneering work during the AIDS pandemic.

Dr. Alissa Walter is an Associate Professor of History at Seattle Pacific University, where she teaches modern Middle Eastern and world history courses. Her research focuses on how citizens and governments interact with and influence one another. She is the author of the recent book, "Contested City: Citizen Advocacy and Survival in Modern Baghdad" (Stanford University Press). She earned her PhD in Modern Middle Eastern History from Georgetown University.

Dive into the history of Conscience!📖

Joe DiPietro's riveting play takes place in Washington, D.C. in the 1950s and tells the story of Senator Margaret Chase Smith as she became one of the first members of Congress to publicly challenge McCarthy and his fear-mongering tactics. Conscience is full of important historical context—learn more in our study guide and get your tickets today!

Today, we celebrate Fannie Lou Hamer's birthday.🎵

Fannie Lou Hamer was a voting rights activist, women's rights activist, disability advocate, community organizer, and a fearless leader of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. In 1964, her testimony before the Democratic National Convention helped expose the violence and injustice Black citizens faced when they tried to register to vote.

She was famous for “telling it like it is.” At rallies across the country, she paired stories from her own life with the songs of faith that strengthened her, inviting listeners not only to hear the truth of injustice, but to act on it.

Taproot Theatre is excited and honored to share her story on our stage in January. Learn more at taproottheatre.org/fannie/. by @taproottheatre
