Discovered by anthropologist Susan A. Phillips in 2000, the hobo graffiti was written in chalk and grease pencil on a bridge over the Arroyo Seco. The markings lasted for more than 109 years, but now they’re gone.

Dating back to 1914, the graffiti was discovered by anthropologist Susan A. Phillips in the year 2000. Several people have reported on the markings over the years, including Tom Carroll of the LA Times, who shot the most recent footage I could find in 2023. Few people have influenced punk rock in more ways than Shawn Stern. From starting the influential Youth Brigade as a teenager to launching BYO Records to running @PunkRockBowling, Stern has his fingerprints all over the last four-plus decades of punk music.

Now Stern is launching his latest project, a two-day benefit show called Fight To Unite, this Friday and Saturday at the Belasco.
