I took control over many things in life at the age of 50 that I used to just accept as " that's just how it is".

One of those things was listening to a trusted few, reflecting on how I felt about what they were seeing and telling me.

I began tuning into things that were energy giving and moving towards them instead of energy sucking.... Which was what a college friend of mine said she told her daughters to live by.

I also began recognizing patterns in my own behavior and learning what their source was which included being evaluated for ADHD.

I wouldn't say I was misdiagnosed with anxiety but ADHD behavior certainly is anxiety producing.

now instead of expending energy trying to hide the behaviors, I work with them.

And for those of you who think an ADHD diagnosis is a convenient excuse for behavior I would say to you that I'm not the kind of person who excuses myself from accountability.

A new school year is off and running for both these boys! We were in a little bit of denial that school was starting but it's in full swing now with exams, Cross country meets, AP classes, back to school night, homecoming right around the corner, MSU football games, and praying for snow.

Guess who is twenty years young today!! Happy 20th birthday!
@eric_thies0
My heart broke wide open the day you were born and filled with more love than I knew what to do ❤️ I didn't know it was possible to love someone this much (and also be terrified at the same time). Becoming your mother has been and remains a great adventure. You are an incredible human and continue to amaze me! Always be yourself because yourself is pretty cool.

Happy birthday! by @taradell

You don't need another list of foods you're "supposed "to eat.

You may need help turning what you already know into something that works in your actual life.

That's the work we're doing this fall inside the Flexibly Fit Nutrition Collective.

Join us for the thirty days this fall to focus on one intention.

30 days.
Lots of practice.
No perfection required.
What would your one thing be?

Navigating a life-threatening peanut allergy has given both my son and I a good lesson in self-advocacy and agency.

The thought of sending him to college a bit more protected from accidental exposure pushed us to commit to Oral Immunotherapy. Eighteen 2-3 hour appointments over the course of 36 weeks plus a 40 minute drive each way? So worth it!

This is a picture from first severe reaction to the second of him safely eating a entire peanut. The relief I felt after this moment moved me to tears (not to hard to do these days).

As a dietitian leading scientific and nutrition affairs for food companies, I have had direct behind-the-scenes insight to food allergy labeling and cross-contamination risk even before the voluntary statements started getting traction on labels.

Being a mother to a son navigating a world full of peanuts has flooded me with the emotional side of food allergies. It has been kind of terrifying. You might say I knew too much.

I shifted this fear into action early on educating my son, Eric, on all the different forms and functions of peanuts and how to read labels and ask questions when eating meals, especially when ordering ice cream. Don't even get me started on bakeries. We just avoided them.

Labels can be confusing and even when the statement seems clear to the manufacturer. Know that if it says "traces" whether or not to eat that food is a lesson in weighing risk.

Peanut-free manufacturing and allergen-scoops at ice cream parlors are much more commonplace today, so having an allergy is a little easier.

But thanks to the research at Sean Parker Center for Allergy Research and Northern Nevada Allergy Clinic's OIT we can feel a little more relieved. I mean, dropping your kid of at college is hard enough, let alone worrying about him getting exposed peanuts! His final OIT challenge had him eat about six peanuts with zero reaction! 👏 🤩

Even this bird has taste .

Aside from standing in line to purchase U2 tickets, one of the only lines worth the hype I've ever stood in to get a baked good.

The smoke cleared, the rain came the night before, and my knees held me up, up, up and down, down, down, down for my #10 of Bridger Ridge Run.

9 months ago I got a new ACL and the doc reattached my MCL to the bone on the right side. Having gone through this on the left side, I knew it would be at least 6 months until I could start running again and that would leave three months to get fit enough to at least hike the Ridge Run.

Today I ran a lot of it! Paced well and felt good. I cried on the way up to Sac so happy to be with this community that feels like coming home every time in these beautiful mountains feeling strong.

I ran this race first in 2013. Eric was 7. At 19 this year he camped with me the days leading up to the race and I shared this sanctuary with him and a glimpse of the experience. It was very special. He was an excellent crew captain and cheer squad.

So blessed and so grateful!

Missed you Marilee, Jackie and Zellners

Summer loving has included returning to running post right knee ACL reconstruction + MCL reattachment and teaching Truckee Sports Camp kids how to 'eat like an athlete.'

Thanks to my client BEEUP for fueling the fastest kids in Tahoe! These kids had energy for all the soccer, rugby, rocker, tug-a-war, and lake swimming! And got me through 20 miles 🤸🏼🏃🏼‍♀️of trail time!
Great job team!

My longest-held relationship is the one I have with running. The act of putting one foot in front of the other in a motion that appears (sometimes) to be faster than my walk has been the centralizing factor in not only my career but pretty much my whole life.

As a teenage cross-country runner, I had aspirations of becoming a professional runner, which faded into dreams in college as low ferritin and pervasive body shaming by coaches took hold.

Then, one day, at age 42, I found myself on a random Wednesday in late June running down a section of wet, slick, steep granite on the Appalachian Trail of Mount Moosilauke, crewing an FKT attempt by one of the greatest ultrarunners of all time. I was doing it as casually—but with the greatest intensity—as if it were my job!

In that moment of adventure, it hit me. I was working my hardest not to slip and take out Scott Jurek on day forty-something of his FKT attempt.

THIS IS MY JOB!

Right then, I realized I was living out my teenage dream of getting paid to run.

It didn't happen because I was lucky enough to get a job strategizing sports nutrition for a super cool company. It happened because what it takes to be a runner led me straight to like-minded people who were not only willing to take risks in business but also in the field of adventure, with the very people their products were fueling.

I wasn't the pro runner out in front, as my seventeen-year-old self would have imagined. Instead, it was better. My work was to ensure proper fueling for some of the world's greatest athletes attempting some of the world's greatest athletic feats.

Ten years later, my relationship with running continues, as does my work with brands of all kinds seeking to feed adventurers at every level.

...and the stories and people I met along the way with Chris, Scott, Jenny, and Timmy? Well, there are many from our short crewing time, but those are for another day.
