This weekend, @uspcn hosted an “ICE-free” watch party in Bridgeview for the Morocco vs. Brazil FIFA World Cup game. The event was held following calls from immigrant rights organizations to keep ICE out of stadiums, fan zones and watch parties.

Earlier this month, a member of the Iraqi national team was questioned at O’Hare International Airport for seven hours, and the team’s photographer was denied entry to the U.S. The Iranian national team is under travel restrictions, forcing them to enter and leave the country on the same day as all their matches.

“Community watch parties are going to be protected by the Family Support Network and Rapid Response volunteers,” Muhammad Sankari, organizing director of @aaanmarkaz, said at the press conference last week. “And we demand that this administration stop their racist, ill-treatment of FIFA officials, national teams and spectators attempting to gain entry into the United States to take part in the World Cup.”

Saturday’s event was marked with fresh food, celebration and community.

“The World Cup belongs to the world,” Sankari said on Saturday. “Everybody’s watching. Everyone’s cheering. Everything about it is political. So being able to gather people at a time like this is so important.”

Federal agencies are working to expand social media surveillance as part of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement. Noncitizens, immigrants with legal status and those with pending visa applications could be subject to surveillance.

Experts say to try and keep your identity on social media more private, review and update privacy settings frequently, avoid posting personal information, and monitor your friends and connections.

CPD will now investigate immigration operations in the city, following Mayor Brandon Johnson’s new executive order over the weekend.

“ICE on Notice” gives local law enforcement guidelines on how to respond when federal agents violate the law.

Under the new order, CPD will complete a report on any legal violation by federal agents, preserve body-camera footage during incidents where they do violate the law, and verify federal supervisors on the scene.

Officials say “ICE on Notice” will serve as part of Chicago’s ongoing effort to hold ICE accountable. by @taramobasher

It’s been over a month since the federal government shut down — tying with the longest shutdown in U.S. history.

Experts say the shutdown will have the most impact on low-income families, such as the millions of people who didn’t receive their monthly food stamps this weekend.

Other federal assistance programs, like WIC, are at risk of shuttering completely if the shutdown continues.

Community health workers, known as promotoras de salud, are empowering noncitizens with healthcare resources as thousands of immigrants lost access to state-funded healthcare.

While living in the communities they serve, promotoras de salud often visit resource fairs and schools to help spread information about health insurance, reproductive health and mental health.
