Because, you dun know.

By the time I was 16 I owned every single major BMW album. I remember vividly being about 14, and hearing "Concrete Jungle" for the first time. 🎧

It was life changing for two reasons: i) it was the first time I had what I could identify as a genuinely spiritual experience. I had no framework before that moment what an experience of spirit felt like. ii) it was the first time I understood that MUSIC could be intensely spiritual.

And so, I found my church.

In all the years of going to church with my grandparents, nothing convinced me so absolutely of the reality of my spirit than "Concrete Jungle" did.

Ironic, I know. That "CONCRETE Jungle" convinced me so absolutely of something so non-physical, non-concrete.

That's the genuius of BM.

In high school my friends/classmates found my obsession with Bob unusual - "yo, yuh different enuh Tara. You a real sample!"

But they loved me anyway, and I earned the nickname "Bob" (you guessed it!)...you could spot me a mile away because I had a Bob Marley patch sewn into my Jansport.

On Feb 6 I would arrive at school with a little short wave radio I had, and well, my classmates were gonna listen to Bob whether they liked it or not 😊

At university, it was Bob's words I quoted in my thesis.

Now, Bob just lives in my bones. In my fabric.

Thank you for coming, Bob. Pleasant journeys into the forever and beyond.

It's 4 o' clock on no Tuesday afternoon in particular, and my soul feels at home.

I'm spinning my grandmother's Roger Williams' record (1962) on the turntable.

As her initials go round and round on the label (on a piece of tape probably itself 60 years old), I marvel at the magic portal that has just opened up to me, across space and across time - to my grandmother, wherever in the forever she may be - here, there and everywhere. Yesterday and now.

But then I also feel the flame of my soul flickering as it recognizes the crescendos, and piano trills. Maybe another portion of me is also listening in a slice of time that I can't see, but can only feel.

And it's enough.

Enough to make this Tuesday afternoon sublime.

Thank you for every goodness + every grace.

International Jazz Day: the only one of these 'international' days I might *actually* care about. (Erryday is jazz day roun' here).

Happy spinning, nerds.

I could wax poetic (get it? wax? πŸ˜›) about what jazz means to me, but meh, I'd rather just play some music.

Have a great one, wherever you are.

Billie.

I don't know what to say except that in a series of synchronicities I have found myself being particularly drawn to her ineffable essence in these last few days. Needing to watch her performances, needing to have her grace my turntable (swipe for what I've been spinning). Then on Sunday someone shared with me such an impactful analogy to describe her...one that still reverberates days later.

And then I discovered that it would be her birthday soon. And yesterday I woke up and all I could do while lying in bed was play "If the Moon Turns Green" over and over again, and weep.

And weep.

Because with Billie I never really know what to say.

Because with Billie one is so profoundly aware that one is entering dimensions which hold the deeper mysteries of the human soul.

Dimensions which hold within them the deeper subterranean logic of a human being's life, however that life appears on the surface with all its contradictions and paradoxes. Dimensions which one could never hope to describe, or understand - at least from this side of the veil.

Thank you for coming Billie, and may your journeys into the forever & beyond be enriched.

Remembering you this day.

Whoever the fuck pissed off Lee Morgan that September morning in 1957 before he recorded "A Night In Tunisia" : thank you. The world still owes you a debt of gratitude 65 years later.

We don't need to know what you did, we just know you got burrneeedddd on the track.πŸ”₯ 😀

Pleasant journeys into the forever and beyond, Lee.

Okay so I did NOT KNOW that Ron Carter (@roncarterbassist) played bass on this record. Wow. You learn something new everyday, kids.

For those who knew, move right along. This is me just making the most epic discovery of my day regarding my favorite Roberta Flack record. Fave bassist x fave Roberta Flack record : it's too much for my poor little heart. Jeeez.

Now off to listen to Angelitos Negros.

In honour of Bob Marley, born on this day, 1945. Here is my beat up copy of Uprising.

By the time I was 16 I had in my colllection all of Bob Marley & the Wailers' albums, from Catch A Fire to Confrontation, as well as bits and bobs of earlier material.

In high school, studying this music was a 'religion' for me, and the genesis of my first truly spiritual feeling.

When I was alone in my room (only child - can you tell? πŸ™‚) - my first experience of feeling like I "went to church" was listening to Catch A Fire. It was the first time music affected me - spiritually.

I'm always quietly amused by the smugness of some too cool for school folks (usually non-Jamaican) who dismiss Bob as a pretty "front face" of the Wailers. I've heard/read a few sentiments to that effect since I've been interacting in the vinyl community.

No need to respond or defend. It's just so patently ridiculous that it's not even worth responding to. It's almost as ridiculous as the YouTube comment I read recently where someone wrote that in comparison to Ahmad Jamal, Bill Evans was a 'pretender' (whatever on Earth that means). For any serious student of jazz, you wouldn't even bother to take that on...but you know, the YouTube comment section is not necessarily the locus of the most well thought out perspectives on our human condition.

Thank you, Bob - for everything. It's just been so long now that you live in my internal landscape, and are part of my bones.

For "what has been hidden from the wise and the prudent will be revealed to the babe and the suckling" - indeed.

Peace πŸ‡―πŸ‡²

Okay, so this is my second time properly listening to this record, after picking it up last year November for my birthday. For me an enchanting live set bringing me back to a place of delightful golden 'memories' - recorded on August 14, 1954 in Hollywood, California and released the following year in 1955 (EmArcy).

Is anyone truly ambivalent about Dinah Washington's voice? I feel you either LOVE it, or it's just NOT your cup of tea. πŸ€”

But here is Dinah along some of the very best (Clifford Brown/Max Roach quintet):

Clifford Brown, Maynard Ferguson, Clark Terry (trumpets)

Max Roach (drums)

Harold Land (tenor sax)

Herb Geller (alto sax)

Richie Powell & Junior Mance (piano)

George Morrow, Keter Bets (bass)

Hard to choose a favorite among these classics - You Go Go My Head, Summertime, Alone Together, I've Got You Under My Skin....

Honestly: it's just perfect Sunday listening.

Peace. πŸ‡―πŸ‡²
