These are some of the night creatures that visited, including bandicoots, southern boobook, brushtail possums, Tasmanian devil, fighting Bennetts wallabies, chasing quolls (listen to the growls) and a wedgetail eagle.

The Menzies Research Institute at the University of Tasmania is working to combat the horrible devil facial tumour disease, which has been decimating Tasmanian devil numbers over the past several years. DFTD is a rare thing - an infectious cancer that is spread when biting, fighting and mating. It grows on the face, eats into the bone and eventually stops the devils from feeding. DFTD 2 has been killing devils more quickly than the original strain. There are signs that devils are adapting to some degree - having pups at a younger age for instance - and some seem to have natural immunity. While captive devil populations are in place both in Tasmania and the mainland, it is vital we try to cure the disease and stop the suffering and population depletion, of our wild devils. A vaccine is being developed, but there is the added problem of inoculating wild devils without treating the same onesrepeatedly or feeding non-target species. The goal is to develop an AI-enhanced bait dispenser that can recognise when a devil is present and drop a vaccine-containing bait. Trials of an early design have been ongoing on properties including our own. Where there are few other carnivores it is easier to target the devils, but where the Eastern quolls are numerous, as here, it becomes that much harder! The quolls come out earlier at night, are more inquisitive and more persistent, than the devils.

This is the l last bird I expected to see on camera near this bird bath! It must be a fair size as it's on the ground a couple of meters behind the bird bath.
