The Great Salt Lake FKT: 14:04:49

I heard of this thing called “RAGSLOD” (Ride Around Great Salt Lake One Day) when I moved here 4 years ago. I thought it was insane and I would never do that.

Fast forward a few years, I got hooked on the ultra thing after doing lots of adventuring all over the west. Last October, the ideation of this ride started to become something I could fathom.

A good friend, @this.aint.the.place helped with mentorship. He’d done the loop multiple times, had streamlined the route to near perfection, and held the FKT. He helped me scout, we talked about setup endlessly, and gave me the confidence boost I needed.

I waited for an ideal day, as I wanted the conditions to be as good as possible. Monday, March 23rd was that day. The wind was favorable, and it was dry and not too hot.

Aside from cursing head winds occasionally and a lack of appetite for 5 hours, it went mostly smooth. I really wanted to go sub 14, but the train at mile 233 put that out of reach. Regardless, I rode as hard as I could given the circumstances.

Honestly, I don’t really know why I did it. Maybe I wanted to find the limit of my mind and body. Maybe it’s to tell my future family that I rode around where the Salt Lake used to be. Maybe I’m just stupid.

Regardless, here I am. Body is wrecked, mind is content. Realizing I’m capable of more than I think.

Fundy Fisherman’s Day. Always looked forward to racing across the lobster crates. I destroyed my shin right after this pic. Loved every second of it. Feels like another lifetime. by @tateknows
