There are shows that function as performances, and then there are shows that feel like gatherings. "Bando & Friends" at @dragonflyhollywood leaned firmly toward the latter — a curated night built around community, collaboration, and shared love.
The event brought together a lineup of artists closely connected to
@blimesandthebando, including @gavlyn, @garrettgloom, and @basivibe. (...)

"Bando & Friends" felt like a reflection of a chosen family - a network of artists connected not only through collaboration, but through shared growth over time. At the center of it, @blimesbrixton doesn't just perform; she creates space. Through storytelling, vulnerability, and presence, she brings people into that world, even if just for a few hours.

I've been to many shows, but I had never seen that level of love - not just on stage, but throughout the entire room. It was constant, visible, and shared between artists and audience alike. The birthday moment (you had to be there!) in particular, felt like something more than a highlight - it felt like a core memory in the making.

Closing the night were @theundercoverdreamlovers, the Los Angeles project led by singer-songwriter Matt Koenig. Over the years, the band has built a reputation for nostalgic, synth-driven dream pop — the kind of music that feels equally at home on late-night drives and sunlit festival stages. Songs like “A Way Out” and “Weekend Love” helped establish their identity as masters of shimmering, groove-heavy indie pop.

But the set at School Night suggested that the band is entering a new phase. Earlier in the evening, I had spoken briefly with the band’s bassist and mentioned some of their older material. His response was revealing: the night’s setlist would be drawn almost entirely from new songs from their upcoming album. What followed confirmed that shift.

(…) That range is part of what makes School Night such a valuable fixture in the Los Angeles music ecosystem. As a weekly showcase curated by @kcrw and @makeoutmusic, the series continues to function as a kind of living snapshot of the city’s evolving indie landscape — a space where emerging artists test new material, established acts experiment with new directions, and audiences discover sounds they might not have encountered otherwise.

They say it's a rite of passage for every photographer. Went home after KP's show, found out I had an SD card issue... and that all of my 800+ shots were JPEGs only. It's growth from pain 😮‍💨

It’s been years since I last saw @kingprincess69 — 2019, a small Paris venue, back when “1950” had just reshaped her life overnight. That show felt intimate, almost fragile. Last night at @thewiltern, stepping into the photo pit instead of the crowd, I felt the weight of that distance: she’s grown, weathered, sharpened. And yet, the emotional core that first pulled people to her remains completely intact. (...)

Seeing her now, years after that Paris show when everything still felt new and combustible, was strangely grounding. She’s older, steadier, funnier, more honest. Less glittery pop-star mythology, more lived-in queer rock icon. And the crowd mirrored that evolution: not screaming teenagers, but partners, friends, exes, long-term fans who’ve grown alongside her."

It had been a long time since I’d attended a show where a male artist inspired this level of unfiltered devotion. Before the lights even dimmed at @theechola, girls were already yelling, “You’re so hot!” into the room — the kind of chaotic worship that used to orbit early-2010s Tumblr heartthrobs. And then @gunnar walked out in an American-flag shirt, a visual that felt both on-brand and strangely enigmatic. He’s a Los Angeles native, raised on alt-pop and nostalgia-tinged rock, and now — finally — headlining his first hometown tour stop, with the support of @itszoeko and @thebandfriday.

Few artists embody controlled chaos like @riconasty. At the Los Angeles stop of her Lethal tour, she turned the Fonda Theatre into a collision of punk, rap, and rage — a space where catharsis felt communal and every scream found rhythm.

Toronto artist @sadboi opened the night with MC TK, who also acted as her hypewoman, ad-lib partner, and (at times) unintentional photobomber. TK kept yelling, “Make some noise, LA!” every few minutes, like she was trying to manifest an earthquake.

Rico Nasty isn’t here to charm you — she’s here to exorcise something. It’s rap, it’s rage, it’s therapy with eyeliner and distortion pedals. Not everything hit perfectly — the mix was heavy, her pace unrelenting — but the energy was undeniable.

Like many music enthusiasts, I've been to a lot of concert. But I had never seen fans love an artist the way Janine's fans love her.

The night opened with @brandonbrandonbrandon, a solo performer sitting on a stool with just his electric guitar. His sound lived between R&B, soul, and indie rock, and his smooth voice, reminiscent of Frank Ocean, filled the room with gentle melancholy.

Then came @janine, from Auckland, New Zealand, known for her deeply honest R&B and her close connection with fans. Her stage setup — roses spiraling up the mic stand, guitarist Josh and drummer Dillon backing her — mirrored the warmth of her new album Pain and Paradise. She opened with a reflective spoken intro layered with piano and guitar, ending softly with the phrase, "and that is… pain and paradise." The crowd screamed every word that followed.

In the front row was Ralphie, 35, a longtime fan, who told me that Janine has reached out and replied to his DMs on Instagram a few times over the years. That small act of recognition, he said, is what makes her community feel real. Her shows are safe spaces for loving each other, and looking around the room, it was impossible to disagree.

By the end of the night, it was clear that Janine doesn't just have fans — she has a community. They know her stories, her humor, her heartbreaks. They know that behind the glamour and the roses is someone who writes to survive, and who reaches back when they write to her.

The space of the Masonic Lodge is itself a mood: gothic-meets-mid-century, theatrical with arches and atmosphere, but not a church—more like an old world hall that’s been reclaimed. On stage, @jasmine.4.t appeared in a crocheted halter top, half red and half blue, matching her iconic half red and half blue dyed hair. From the first words she said, it was clear this was more than a show: "It means a lot to me that you’re here — especially with all the trans people shit happening right now."

Jasmine, the Manchester-based trans singer-songwriter signed to @saddestfactoryrecords and produced with the likes of @julienrbaker, @lucydacus and @phoebebridgers, has built music that cracks open grief and folds it into survival.

Interlaced with serious weight were moments of levity: Jasmine sipped tea mid-set and joked, "What cheese is made backwards? Edam." A moment later she asked about camembert. The juxtaposition felt intentional—sadness and laughter holding hands.

Saturday night at @thewiltern, everything shimmered — the kind of LA night where it feels like the city is humming with you. The crowd was an oddly perfect mix: 30-somethings who probably saw ODESZA in 2015, a couple parents with a kid wearing soundproof headphones, and groups of friends dressed like the afterparty was already waiting. The Wiltern itself felt alive, every beam of light ricocheting off the art deco walls like a pulse.

@shallou opened with this gentle, emotional EDM that felt more like floating than dancing. His set was all texture — fog, soft pink lights, and music that gave you space to breathe.

Then @bigwildmusic, the musical project of Portland-based multi-instrumentalist Jackson Stell, walked on stage barefoot-looking, peace-sign tee, floral pants, total California calm.

What’s striking about Big Wild is how much of that joy feels intentional. His latest album, Wild Child, leans into the idea of protecting the inner child — the part of you that still finds magic in sound, color, and connection. On stage, that concept comes alive in real time.
