I’m grateful for the man I’ve become, and a huge part of that man was built by the trades. I was 18 when I got into low voltage. I was a brand-new father trying to figure out how to raise my oldest when I was still trying to figure out life myself. No car. No real place to call our own. No roadmap. Just a young man carrying a lot of shit from his childhood while trying like hell not to pass any of it down to his kids. There were so many times I wanted to quit this field. Long days. Shitty jobs. Feeling underpaid, overlooked, exhausted, and wondering if any of it was actually leading somewhere. At 18, I couldn’t see the big picture. At 38, I can. Today, I can look at the tools I’ve collected, the skills I’ve earned, the businesses and relationships I’ve built, and feel proud of what I accomplished. But the tools were never really the accomplishment. The accomplishment was breaking the cycle. The grind came from wanting my kids to have what I didn’t. Stability. Security. A home. Opportunities. The ability to grow up without carrying the same weight I carried. The trades gave me a way to provide that for them. And somewhere along the way, while I was building a better life for my kids, I built a better version of myself too. I wish I could go back and talk to that 18-year-old Jordon on one of those days he wanted to quit. I’d tell him: Keep going. You can’t see it yet, but everything you’re working for is on the other side of these hard days. The trades gave my kids stability.
