POSTS STORIES REELS

Every year, when welcoming NABA’s new students, I focus on a theme from the contemporary world.
This year, I began with a slightly unusual wish for anyone starting their university journey: I told them that I hope they finish their journey here with more doubts than they had when they started.
I chose to speak about uncertainty because we live in a time that constantly demands answers, positions and certainty, often before we have had the chance to understand the complexity of the questions themselves.
It is true that education should give us knowledge and tools. But it should also make us less satisfied with easy answers, more capable of recognising complexity, and more comfortable with questions that need to remain open for a little longer.
And then, when the time comes, able to make a choice even without the comfort of certainty.
Doubts are not a sign of weakness, but the evidence of a critical mindset, which is probably the most valuable instrument in a artist's toolbox.

Welcome to NABA and have a wondeful Academic Year! by @tattoguidotti

At the end of June, we concluded another edition of the Modular Synthesizers Course.

This year, the students’ final performance was titled “Omnirica: A Collective Dream”, a shared exploration of memory, nostalgia, and perception through modular synthesis, unstable sonic architectures, and synthetic memories. An invitation to listen before understanding, and to drift through the space between reality and dream.

Here are some moments from the students’ performances.

Wishing everyone a wonderful summer break, see you again in October for new explorations, sounds, and experiments.

If you're curious about the ideas that shaped experimental music, Audio Culture by Christoph Cox & Daniel Warner is an essential read.

Bringing together writings from pioneers like John Cage, Pauline Oliveros, Brian Eno and Pierre Schaeffer, it offers a fascinating journey through the philosophies, debates and artistic visions that continue to influence electronic music today.

A timeless collection for anyone interested in sound beyond the notes. by @tattoguidotti

🎛 PIONEERS - Isao Tomita

From the first modular synthesizers to today’s electronic landscapes, the synth has always been more than a machine, it’s a tool for imagining new worlds.

In this carousel, we explore the visionary work of Isao Tomita, the Japanese composer who transformed the Moog synthesizer into a full orchestra, blending classical music, technology, and endless sonic experimentation.

A journey through his legacy and the artists who followed his path: from cosmic soundscapes to ambient explorations, from electronic pioneers to modern innovators. by @tattoguidotti

It was such a blast to create and perform the live soundtrack for the NABA Fashion Show 2026, Ricette, together with my favourite contact microphone alchemist Natalia Polvani (@natpolvani) and Mirko Ditroia (@meirks_), Giulia De Sanctis (@adelenelfantabosco), Maria Elisa Romani (@mer.01001101) and Mariangela Mangone (@__s7igmv__), students of the Multimedia Languages course.

Held at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Milan, the show explored the idea of recipes as a metaphor for the creative proces, where techniques, materials, intuition, and experimentation come together to shape new forms of expression.

With The Semi Dish Orchestra, we created an immersive dialogue between electronic experimental sound and the Conservatorio Percussion Orchestra, a journey through process, fashion, sound, images and artificial intelligence, celebrating the collaboration between NABA and the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Milan. by @tattoguidotti

It was a pleasure to take part in CROSS Festival 2026 once again this year, performing alongside @natpolvani with our duo Turbospira.

Nat and I performed Ἄνεμοι, a 40 minutes piece in four acts for modular synth and contact microphones that we compose specifically for this occasion.

We were inspired by this year's theme Contemplating the Invisible, and the festival offered a meaningful space for exploring the relationship between performing arts, spirituality, and presence. We are grateful to have shared our work as part of this inspiring programme.

Thank you to @cross_project team and @antonella_cirigliano for this wonderful occasion to perform! by @tattoguidotti

📺 Waveform Watchlist: THE RISE OF THE SYNTHS

Narrated by iconic director John Carpenter, The Rise of the Synths dives into the origins of the Synthwave scene, tracing its journey from underground forums and online communities to its huge influence on today’s pop culture.

What is Synthwave? It’s a fusion of nostalgia and sound, creativity and culture, blending old-school synths with modern imagination. Is it just a fleeting revival, or a lasting musical movement?

🎛 PIONEERS - Serge Tcherepnin

Born in 1941, Serge Tcherepnin created the Serge Modular Synthesizer in the 1970s, designing a system that was flexible, experimental, and accessible. Modules could change function depending on the patch, making it a true sound laboratory.

His work has influenced generations of experimental composers, sound artists, and modern Eurorack designers, including Make Noise and Random*Source.
