Finally! Some literature I've been wanting for quite a while now, both for research and pure enjoyment. 📚

Sadly, I still have to wait for Tattoo Traditions of Asia, which has been seriously delayed – but better late than never!

"MARKED FOR LIFE!

Converting an old electric shaver is easy. With ballpoint pens filled with different colours, the tattoos turn out almost like the ones shown on the price list.

All tattooing equipment was confiscated whenever it was discovered.

The tattooist’s price list was found hidden beneath a floor mat in the prison when it was renovated in the early 2000s.

The price – two packets of cigarettes per tattoo – meant that many of the inmates got jaundice thrown in for free.

P.S. Take a look at Stickan’s tattoos!"

From an exhibition display at Sveriges Fängelsemuseum (the Swedish Prison Museum) in Gävle. It is one of Sweden’s three dedicated prison museums, located 171 km (106 miles) north of Stockholm. @sverigesfangelsemuseum

Unfortunately, due to confidentiality restrictions, I have not been able to access any further information about Stickan.

Sailor Jerry, born Norman Collins, was as stubborn, rebellious and uncompromising as the tattoos he became famous for. From sailor to tattoo legend — discover the man behind one of the most iconic names in tattoo history. Not that Jerry himself would likely have cared much for the distinction — especially given how mainstream and outsourced his name has become.

This is part of Tatuteket’s newly translated, multilingual articles on tattoo history.

Once again, I find myself explaining the old myth about tattoos and criminality – and the difference between correlation and causation.

It's both fascinating and frustrating that so many people still believe tattoos can tell us something about a person's intelligence, morality or character beyond what the tattoos themselves explicitly communicate.

Tattoos have existed for thousands of years and have been worn by people from virtually every walk of life. They are a form of cultural expression, not a measure of intelligence, morality or criminality.

Before judging tattooed people based on old stereotypes, take some time to learn about tattoo history and culture. Both I and @tatueringshistorikern (Helena Meyer) have written extensively about this subject over the years.

Knowledge beats prejudice.

Cheers!

Feeling incredibly grateful and humbled to receive the 2026 Byggnads Cultural Scholarship for my work with Tatuteket.

Thank you to Byggnads for believing in the importance of preserving and sharing tattoo history, and thank you to everyone who has supported the project since 2019. This encouragement means more than words can express.

@byggnads 🙏♥️

Also many thanks to @gagovonhell for suggesting that I apply for this scholarship.

Onwards and upwards!

I know I’ve been promising a new article for a couple of weeks now. Unfortunately, a lack of time combined with some technical issues has slowed things down.

The article will be published as soon as time allows. Thank you for your patience.

The T-shirt didn’t reach the minimum this time.

Thanks to everyone who showed interest and reserved one — I truly appreciate the support.

I may revisit the idea later.

I was truly touched and honoured when SRT (Sveriges Registrerade Tatuerare – the Swedish tattoo association) asked to include my article about Inge in their memorial.

Saying yes was never a question – that text would not exist without the generosity, knowledge and support of several of their members.

My sincere thanks to @sverigesregistreradetatuerare
