Dominic Nahr is a photographer for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ). In this role, he has worked in Ukraine more than 20 times over the past several years. Beyond Ukraine, he documents conflict zones around the world, including South Sudan, Syria, and Lebanon. Since 2018, @dominicnahr Nahr has been a Leica Ambassador. Commissioned by Leica Camera, he photographed the city of Biel/Bienne. Through its predecessor companies, Leica Camera has maintained a presence in the Biel/Bienne region for more than 120 years. On the occasion of Biel/Bienne Festival of Photography, the company has supported an exhibition series dedicated to the city for the third consecutive year. Between War and Home is a film by Tavi Venzin @tavivenzin that documents Nahr’s work in Biel/Bienne and places it in the context of his photographic projects in conflict zones around the world. Portraits of Johnny.
Taken in October 2025 in Seoul, Korea.

I met Johnny on my last evening in Korea. I was at a café enjoying a coffee and reflecting on what had been an incredible 10-day stay in Korea’s capital city before flying back to Japan the next day. However, I was a little disappointed that I never had the chance to check out Seoul’s jazz scene.

Just as I was sitting there thinking, this guy sat next to me and we started chatting. We immediately hit it off and started talking about photography, music, and our travel experiences. We then started talking about jazz and our favorite artists. He proceeded to tell me that he runs several jazz clubs in the city. I was completely blown away by the coincidence and started asking him more about it. But instead, he invited me to see it for myself.

He was kind enough to give me the best final experience in Seoul I could have ever asked for. We had a delicious Korean dinner at Gwangjang Market, before he drove me to one of his clubs and opened it up so I could take a look. His favorite records displayed on the wall, posters all around, warm lighting, a wonderful and inviting atmosphere. We spent a few hours jamming, talking, and taking photos.

I’m still deeply grateful for that experience and the remarkable coincidence that let me spend my last night in Seoul playing, listening to, and talking about jazz with Johnny. The perfect way to end my trip.

One from the archive: I took this shot of @gabrielle.pietrangelo back in 2023 in Tucson.

Earlier this year, Gabby featured my photo (color version) on her most recent album. It’s a huge honor to see my work on an album cover and in celebration of the album release I felt it would be appropriate to create two prints of the photo and gift one to Gabby and one to myself. by @tavivenzin

A week ago I had the absolute pleasure of sharing my short documentary in front of a sold-out crowd at Cinema REX in Biel!
Back in January, @philpenman spent 4 days in Biel to create his exhibition “96 Hours Biel/Bienne” and I had the chance to spend the duration of that time with him to create this video.

So many people put absolutely everything into making this project possible and I’m thrilled I was able to be just a small part of it. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who came to watch the documentary and Phil’s presentation and overwhelmed by the amount of positive feedback I received. Thank you all❤️ by @tavivenzin

A dream come true❤️ My short documentary will be playing at Cinema REX in Biel this Thursday. It’s been a huge dream to be able to see my work on the big screen and I can’t believe that this week, it’s actually happening. The screening will be part of @philpenman’s presentation about his exhibition “96 Hours Biel/Bienne”.

5 years already! What a special feeling this is.
It truly doesn’t feel real. Such a big thank you to all the incredible people that I’ve met and have helped along the way in making this production company possible.
