Honoring a Timeless Partner

Few animals have contributed to human progress as profoundly — and quietly — as the horse. From ancient nomads on the Eurasian steppes to modern Olympic arenas and backyard barns, horses have carried goods, ploughed fields, won wars and comforted hearts. Even in today’s high-tech world, draft horses still work organic farms, mounted rangers protect wildlife, and therapy ponies bring joy to hospitals.
In recognition of this lasting partnership, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 79/291 on 3 June 2025, declaring 11 July “World Horse Day.” The resolution calls on governments, schools, businesses and individuals to celebrate the role of horses — and to tackle the challenges they face in the modern world. by @tawilson67

I crouched behind the reeds, aiming my camera as they started to run by and move away. First group went by. Second group went by. I waited. Were there more? I heard them and the sound of their hooves sounded closer this time. I held my breath and stayed perfectly still. At least four more groups came by, this time much closer to where I crouched.

It was exhilarating and heartbreaking. They are gorgeous horses. All the colors are there, with chrome and markings galore, including a few gorgeous bald (white) faces. But I knew this would be the last time I’d see them run free. Next time I see any of them, they will be running from a helicopter that will steal their freedom forever.

Then I saw the palomino. The distinctive limp of a club foot. My heart sank because I knew he’ll be put down on the spot. Even though, with proper care he could be a companion horse or pasture pet. I know, because I owned one.

As the last horses went by, a cow and two calves looked at us and the cow decided she better run too, leaving the calves behind. Not exactly mother of the year, but self preservation seemed to kick in and eventually the calves followed.

The overwhelming sadness and frustration at a broken system washed over me. It shouldn’t be this way. The government has ignored these horses since 2010. They allowed the herd to grow, knowing they only would allow 7-10 to be there. 7-10 is not a viable population, it has no basis in science, it is goverment failure. Lahontan HMA, July 2026. In 15 days these tiny babies will be running for their lives while a helicopter chases them and their families from the sky. Foaling season is not over. If they survive the chase, the trap, the trailer - they'll find themselves in a dry dusty holding pen awaiting an uncertain future. If their luck holds, they'll eventually be adopted by someone who cares instead of sold for $25 and found in a kill pen ready to ship to slaughter. The nearby HMA has an AML (appropriate management level) of 7-10 - not genetically viable and completely unacceptable. The BLM Wild Horse & Burro program is broken. Speak up now. First night of life on my garage floor. With each trip out to the yard and back to the garage she would lay down closer and closer to me. Miss Koa, you are too smart for words, wear your emotions on your ears, vocally tell me when anything is wrong, and love being groomed more than any horse I have ever known. Happy 5th Birthday, Koa! You are a shining light! ✨🌟💫 by @tawilson67

At 12 hours old, and mixed up in the wrong band, she was carried out of a nighttime dust cloud by my rescue teammate and foal partner Deana Kirk while I held a flashlight. Then she and I spent her first night of life sleeping (for a few minutes anyway) on my garage floor in a suburban neighborhood. And the next morning she took a liking to Drew who finally got her to drink a whole bottle (from a beer bottle with an attached rubber bottle nipple) before she proceeded to follow him everywhere before napping in the grass. She was all legs then and she’s all legs now. She’s my speed demon, my trouble maker, and full of personality and sass. She was the youngest foal rescued that year but she let it be known she would not be the lowest in the pecking order! She was, and still is, the fastest of the herd.
