Some places serve food. Some places serve history. ✊🏾

Learning more about Mr. Brian Mays, @samsbbq_atx , Ideal Barbershop and the history of East 12th really put something into perspective for me.

Black Austin didn’t just exist in this city — Black Austin helped build the culture of this city.

These barbershops, restaurants, businesses and gathering places became foundations for community, ownership and opportunity during times when those things weren’t always easily available to us.

And that’s what makes Mr. Mays and Sam’s BBQ hit different. Hearing about him turning down millions for the property because he understood what that establishment meant to the community says everything. In a city changing as fast as Austin, preserving something that has been here for generations IS legacy.

Being born and raised here, being a Black artist representing ATX, and now having the opportunity to experience and learn this history through Black Austin Tours means a lot to me. Because before I can talk about leaving my mark on Austin, I gotta appreciate the people who left theirs before me.

Much love to Black Austin Tours for keeping these stories alive and reminding us that progress doesn’t have to mean forgetting where we came from.

Big S/O to @funmi_ogunro & @javierwallace512 for capturing and documenting it all 🫱🏾‍🫲🏼❤️

Learn the history. Support the legacy. Preserve the culture. Then add your own chapter. 🖤
