I wrote this post from a past personal conviction. The idea was inspired by a season of striving, confusion, & burn out. I poured my heart & soul into this one. I hope it encourages anyone who feels weary in ministry or is on the verge of burnout.

My kids and I love to color together. I naturally color the sky blue, and my seven-year-old follows suit. Meanwhile, my five-year-old almost always colors the sky purple.

To me, blue seems like the obvious choice for the sky. But I can’t disregard the purple my five-year-old likes. He likes the sky the most when it’s purple. He sees the sky that way from his perspective.

This reminds me of how we hold our opinions. Or more so, how we recklessly let them fly! It reminds me that I can be wrong, and challenges me to become curious about someone else’s point of view.

Just because I prefer blue doesn’t mean blue is the only right color. We often do the same thing with our opinions. We become experts based on our strong convictions. Having strong convictions is one thing, forcing them on others is another.

When we ourselves are experiencing immense grief don’t we long so desperately for relief, not added stress? Why is it that so many a times others enter into our pain & grief already determined to be the hero? How many times are we guilty of doing the same to others?

Unintentionally we may add to their pain when we push them to bypass their discomfort. Good intentions may subtly mask pride.

Stepping into the room of someone else’s pain takes great & prayerful wisdom. It takes a lot of humility too. One who is unaware can be tempted to make someone else’s grief about themselves. That is why ‘The Old Minister’ in the story is an excellent example for us when it comes to sharing in someone else’s pain.

Like him, we come humbly, with a quiet and gentle Spirit—intending to sit with, mourn with & be with our friend in need. This is an example of true refuge and strength (Psalm 46). Our quiet, steady presence can be strength for the weak. A solid strength that point’s to Christ’s power.

When we choose to be a steady, quiet & sturdy presence in the room among one who is so desperate, weak & hopeless, that in it of itself reveals Christ’s comfort & power.

There is so much power in stillness.

Relief & rescue may not come to a person the way we feel they need it. Healing hardly comes the way we expect it to.

When helping a grieved friend, we are to throw off our desire for them to heal on our timeline & patiently wade the waters of grief with them. Showing up for them may mean leaving our opinions & efforts to ‘fix’ them at the door. Being there for someone may look like laying face down with them, crying with them & being still. We attune to their needs, not make their pain a need for us to be known.

In our humility we can deny our sinful flesh to be the hero. Being still requires strength from the Holy Spirit. I can’t help but believe that this supernatural stillness will point to the true hero and healer of their pain—Jesus. Our ultimate refuge and strength in times of need. by @taylorgwilde

If God’s will for us is to bear fruit, then what does He do in our fruitless seasons?

“Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away.” John 15:2

Does this mean that God goes around unrelentingly cutting branches, giving up on us, just to throw us away into to discard pile? No—never. Not at all.

If you are feeling discouraged because you can’t seem to find any evidence for fruit bearing in your life and this is causing you to be fearful of what God thinks of you, then I want to encourage you with these truths:

God does not cut you off.

He does not give up on you.

You are far too valuable than that!

If you, the branch, fall off the trellis and onto the ground along the way God will gently lift you back up.

He will first wash you off and then fasten you back onto the trellis.

You’ll be thriving again!

So what is the trellis? Since the vine is a representation of you and the vinedresser a picture of God, and the trellis is what God anchors the vine to— I like to believe that the trellis is your time in the Word, prayer, your church community and your close friends or family who love and disciple you.

See, being attached to the trellis isn’t rocket science, it’s abiding. You stay attached, you thrive. You fall, there is no condemnation, God just puts you back where you belong. He tenderly cares for you in the midst of where you’ve fallen because He desires for you to flourish.

The Greek verb ‘airo’, which the text is talking about in this verse, is better described as “to take up”, rather than “to take away.”

“Lift up”.
