THE MYSTERY OF PERCEPTION out now from @archwayeditions
Indianapolis, IN

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

It started at a reading in 2022 and now after ten hours of interviews, countless trips back and forth from Indianapolis to New York City, and hours upon hours of transcription and editing, it is finally a tangible book out in the world today. I am so grateful for @tillwhentillman and everyone involved. This book really felt like an act of love.

Thank again to @andrewdurb1n @emilylabarge & @somanytumbleweeds for their wonderful contributions! And, of course, to the best team: @mayascoffsky @celardolor @stationsofthecrass @miarisher ! by @taylorlewandowski

Excited to share the cover for THE MYSTERY OF PERCEPTION, a conversation with Lynne Tillman by Taylor Lewandowski. Out this April and available for preorder now 🖤🔮📖🖋️ A book length interview with Tillman, beloved American writer, that spans memoir, scrapbook, cultural criticism, and history in a lively, compact package. Critic Lewandowski strings together her many lives and worlds, from a Long Island childhood, to her colorful Downtown NYC life in the 1970’s and 80’s, to her psychoanalytical fiction, to her historicizing New York City with Stephen Shore's Factory photographs and Jeannette Watson's Books & Co., to her “Madame Realism” art criticism.

Lynne Tillman has devoted her life to using language as a tool to synthesize the chaos of our world into intricate, fragmented pieces about perception, gender, photography, family, American history, and much more, and this pocket-size primer is a fascinating narrative unto itself that will be the jumping off point to her vast oeuvre from now on.

Anyone with a passing interest in 20th to 21st century culture will find fascinating her run-ins with the likes of Susan Hiller, Méret Oppenheim, Charles Henri Ford, Paula Fox, Lou Reed, John Cale, Barbara Kruger and Kathy Acker, just to name a few. Featuring beautiful, full color photographs and contributions from Andrew Durbin, Emily LaBarge, and Claire Donato, this is the ideal introduction into the encyclopedic, obsessive mind of Lynne Tillman taken in New York City by @taylorlewandowski

storyfort 2026: a woman named Juno holding knife describes a haunted prison across the street, catsitting in Oslo, William Gass’ The Tunnel (and surprising Midwest associations like the breath of a horse), the aura of Gordon Lish, a man berating me for expressing my joy for the Wuthering Heights soundtrack, The Lemonheads, crowd moping, detailed dreams, LIBRARY!, assault rifle reveal, summer camp bafflement, on your knees proposal, The Boys of Boise, orange cowboy boots, @sugarcainberman behind bars at the coffee shop, Logan’s laughter, Caroline’s cheerleading, kicked in the face, roadtrip act 3, John Gregory Dunne’s influence, Anika’s genius, the greatest live band ever: the jesus lizard, misunderstanding, embarrassing entries in the notes app, bitterness and resentment, double mastectomy, Monticello, boring road trip w/ Michel Houellebecq, leaving tour and entering “normal” life like a war vet, knowing your limitations, old bands revived from prime days at warped tour, a teaching banning the words “thigh” and “restaurant,” and the last night thinking about a cool cabin on a bunk bed, forgotten dreams, and the flight home. by @taylorlewandowski
