During this run, I overheard another racer who had some major life setbacks talk about her training. She said, “I would have given up and quit if I had friends who would have let me.”
I thought about that a lot during this trail race.
Honestly, This run was one of my worst. I somehow missed the part where the course description mentioned going up a literal mountain… and then up MORE mountains. I also tripped and fell twice right on my knee, making every step painful. It was 8 miles of literal hell for me. 🤷‍♀️
But somewhere between the mountain summitting, the falling down, and questioning every decision that led me there, I kept thinking about all the things in my life I’ve ever wanted to quit. And how, every single time, my family and friends have been there to keep me going with their love, encouragement, and belief in me, especially when I didn’t have much of it for myself.
I think sometimes the best thing you can have isn’t the strength to never want to quit. It’s people who love you enough to not let you quit.

A 10K that includes 2,000+ feet of elevation gain in the first 2.5-ish miles… why not?
Oh and let’s start the race at over 8,000 feet above sea level? Sure, thats only about 25% less oxygen molecules per breath!
By mile 0.25, I was already ready to quit 😂 and seriously consider it- but I had gotten a nail in my tire on the way up, so I knew I had no where else to go - that was my “why” in that moment 😂
Around mile 1.5, I called my friend, @shelby.walker1 , the one who talked me into signing up for this race just to let her know I hated her. But honestly, talking to her kept me distracted enough to forget how much my legs—and lungs—were questioning my life choices. It was nice to hear from someone encouraging and who had also previously experienced this same race so she knew exactly what I was feeling!
There was also a brief puke-and-rally situation- proud of that one!
At one point I took my headphones out and just listened to everything around me. The mountains, the trees, the runners gasping for air right along with me... it was honestly kind of beautiful. Misery really does love company.
This race humbled me for sure. And unfortunately, somewhere between wanting to die on the climb and crossing the finish line, I decided I need to come back with vengeance next year for this mountain.

Apparently in old Ireland, the brighter colored your house was, the richer you were. After this trip, my house will be repainted to dark black…. But at least I’m being cultured! Jk, Ireland was beautiful and I learned a lot about the history and culture here!

Little Red 2026!
I was bummed when my doctor advised against me doing the full century due to a “nasty infection” but hey, my overall health is more important than strava kudos or Instagram likes anyways. I’d rather take it easy today so I can do more of what I enjoy tomorrow! Plus 55 miles is still good…
