may is mental health awareness month! as many may know my biggest passion in life is supporting and spreading awareness regarding mental health & diagnosed mental illness. in the spirit of a whole month dedicated to this idea… i wanted to share some possible “food for thought” regarding societal awareness & stigma surround mental health. over the course of specifically this spring semester i was presented with several opportunities to speak with individuals who currently work within the mental health field and found that all these conversations eventually centered around one idea… where does people’s willingness to support & advocate for mental illness stop? in recent years these ideas have become more mainstream… which is so amazing!! the growth we have seen over the past 20 years alone when it comes to destigmatizing mental health has been so positive. this does bring to mind the question i previously mentioned… how far are people willing to go to support mental health? how often have we said or heard others notice a homeless individual on the street and blame their “drug habits” for their situation? a simple google search will tell you that 60-70% of the US homeless population have a diagnosed mental illness, many with symptoms including auditory or visual hallucinations. these symptoms make it extremely difficult for some to hold a job. why are so many willing to self-diagnose themselves with anxiety or depression, but when they see scars on someone else’s body they whisper how “weird” or “crazy” that person must be. about 40% of individuals with depression have experienced some form of self-harm since their diagnosis. why are people so willing to show their support for mental health but pass judgment when others show serious symptoms of their diagnosis? i hope that as society continues to push back against the stigma surrounding mental illness that more people begin to stand up and speak up about these symptoms that many are afraid to discuss. we cannot reduce the stigma if we continue to brush real symptoms & experiences of mental illness under the rug. during this month & the rest i hope we work to show more support for those struggling 💜🩵 by @tayreigh
