Flailing Upwards /// one of my unspoken rules with myself is that I must always take a photo of every wacky waving inflatable arm flailing tube man I come across. There’s just somethin about ‘em that brings me so much giddiness, even if he’s only being used as a ploy to sell me fireworks or a used Toyota Corolla.

It’s like spotting an endangered species. A lone iceberg, a listless fragment of a tragically receding whole. /// I’m grateful to have gotten the experience of witnessing and appreciating the Mendenhall glacier before it’s gone.

This frame was captured at Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, which has been dramatically receding and thinning over recent years, retreating at a relative rate of 55 yards/per year according to a 2022 study. To put it visually, the glacier has receded the equivalent of “eight football fields just between 2007 and 2021.” This is, of course, attributed to a warming climate due to human exploitation of the environment. The glacier’s retreat has already proven to have had local impacts, causing significantly damaging flooding and erosion in 2023, and will continue to have negative effects on ecosystems that reverberate at a global level.

Ever heard of the cowboy slang ‘Above Snakes’?

As in: “How ya doin?” “Oh I’m alright, above snakes.” meaning physically above/not dead in the ground where the snakes are — or in other words, “I’m still alive.”

With that logic, I’d like to think then that ‘Above Birds’ could mean: “I feel alive.” It’s elevated, figuratively and literally.

So I’m coining that starting now. How am I? Oh, most days… above snakes. But today, I’m above BIRDS!

Took this double while hiking in Big Bend and totally mesmerized by the stunning cliffsides, the rock-itecture, if you will. And I was thinking about the relationship between the ancient seas, volcanic activity and land, how erosion, tension and the flow of water, magma and wind sculpt the landscape and end up forming mountains over millions of years. Insane?! But hey I’m no geologist, so that’s as far as my knowledge goes, but I am embracing myself as an artist. And the conceptual goal of this photo was to form a pathway of flow between the landscape, reminiscent of the ancient flow-ways that formed it to become the marvel that is now. And hot dog, it turned out. :’)
