One has to be properly attired for a studio talk and meeting with
Shelia of The Hackney Kiln.

Sheila took the photo and Luna my overly familiar wood pigeon
substituting as a hat.

Follow thehackneykiln on instagram and watch out for further developments.

I’ve got two young foxes playing and trying to stay cool in the latest heatwave
on my platform.

I’m so delighted to see them again as it’s a long established spot
for foxes to hang out.

I’m extra delighted as the horrid spikes my neighbour put along the top of the fences
to stop foxes and wildlife moving between the gardens has failed.

Many moons ago I used to have an old fox that would come and sit in my kitchen as I made toast in the morning.
I swear to god he had a gold tooth, sold crack and checked on his “ladies” in the morning.
A true inner city Finsbury Park fox.

Looks like I’ve got new members for the wildlife gang 😎 by @taz_marsh

Hemerocallis lilioasphodelus
just opening for tonight’s seduction.

Each flower only lasts a day or a night in this case.
It’s Lilly like fragrance draws night time pollinators such as moths
and other flying Casanovas.

The joy of having a garden studio is I get the suspense of watching it come to life
and the hope I’ve planted well enough for the drama to unfold over the year.

I’ve done my best as a Bone/pot Dr and mended as much as I could,
with the absolute certainty that this one blows if not on the first firing
at least in the second.

To dry to add the reliefs I intended so back to the drawing board
to muster some form of decorative surfaces that honour the narrative
I started with but doesn’t waste more time if and when she blows.

Not sure that the top bowl will hold the weight of a chubby Wood pigeon
as it lands with out flipping off but as my Bird bath series develops
I will adjust the designs or teach my wildlife how to land gracefully and Parallel
Park. (Feral pigeons graceful landers, wood pigeons need to go back to
flying school).😂 by @taz_marsh

My lineage says I’m a Bone Dr
but London reality says I’m a
a pot mender. 😎

One of mine that traveled a bumpy road,
had momentary salvation
but met its cruel fate
as it flared neck hit the drying shelf and shattered.

So back to surgery, cut its head off and ground its neck with knife
(very satisfying and proof that Potclays Miller stoneware tile body is
tough).

Crack & Split.
Vinegar and a prayer time 🙏

My fault due to build fragmented in time, heat waves and my dodgy mobility.

Some times I’m not sure if my stubbornness is a curse or a blessing
but I’m determined to finish this one
and leave it to the Kiln demons
to decide it’s fate.

Breakfast with my crew this morning and then accusing looks through the kitchen window as I returned inside to do the washing up and refused to continue the morning play and attention session (think of it as feathered therapy sessions and I’m the paitent ).

Squirrel joined but refused to be a part of the photo opportunity 😂.

Latest game from Luna (the big wood pigeon) is to slide down the wooden handrail of the platform
and for me to catch her at the bottom on a repeat cycle.

The others are trying to gain head and shoulder sitting rights but I’m keen to enforce only Lap and hand sitting
and not I repeat the odd habit Luna has of sitting bum down in my hot coffee mug when I am in most need of its industrial kick start.

All told the gang of two wood pigeons (Luna and Leva a mated pair that need marriage therapy) and my two gangsta pigeons Pimpernel and the Dowager Gwen, the squirrels and a recent addition of a field mouse and her kid who have all substituted any instinctive fear of me with an odd type of friendship and their continuing need for a “Private chef” on tap that doles out now limited snacks (it’s summer), filler of bird baths, a play mate and a protector (I chase away cats) and I do daily medical checks of wings, tails and feet.

If I could get them to weed the garden and knead clay (and stay out of my studio) then I’d have a gang that gathers, stands guard all day, bickers noisily, flaps if they are not getting enough attention
but a functional working crew. 😂😎😂 by @taz_marsh

Inside and out.
I enjoy the internal and external details on my work.

As I’m now going to have to make smaller pieces
(no more Big Bertha to fire in 😥)
and only Baby kiln to play with so
decoration, glazes etc are going to have to play
a larger part than when bigger pieces allow for the form and the scale of them
to play a more significant role.

However I still have a plan to fire bigger work off site
but need to acquire wiling strong careful helpers
to transport them when that day arrives 😎 by @taz_marsh

Latest on wildlife soap opera.
I’m on medical and romance duty.
One of the squirrels got badly mauled by a cat,
her back torn up and ears damaged but she’s healing
and becoming increasingly demanding.
She’s taken to banging on my kitchen window when she sees me
and then settles down when I dutifully dole out her meds (walnuts).

Its spring, romance and territory battles (they include me in what they consider their territory) are in full swing.

Pimpernel my original gangsta pigeon lost his white life mate (she got injured and died) which sent him into depression this winter but he’s got a new partner Gwen.
Gwen is mottled white, just as stroppy as Antoinette (his original) and an apprentice gangsta.

This is the bit that makes me giggle, pigeons like people I have discovered have their “type” and he obviously has a thing for blonds (white feathers) that are stroppy and high maintenance. 😂

Rest of wildlife doing their spring thing but I have a new addition, a toad that has taken to sitting on my front door step and croaks at me when I put the rubbish out. 😎 by @taz_marsh

24hrs older and what do you get 🎶

Bird bath test tile (grown up version) for watery Palace urns decorated
with slips and underglazes and a remarkable amount of
patience.

Shadows for sand tide waves sorted
and hopefully only one more session to finish it before the long dry
then its first fire time when hopefully the true colours start emerging
(Slips and underglazes particularly the blues transform from pale lilacs to dark navy’s).

Nothing is drying quick curtesy of months of rain, grey and drizzle, grumble, grumble 😂 by @taz_marsh

The beginning of experiments with Stoneware paper clay
and an obsession with my trusty spirt level.
Nothing beats that little bubble sitting dead centre 😎

Got the bowl attached to the neck and stand and hopefully the inner neck will give it
the structural support it needs. by @taz_marsh

Back to work in shed/studio with heater on full balls.
Outside sink and clay trap plumed in but damn nippy to use
in this foul, cold, wet January to clean up.

Trial birdbath base indented (a long but satisfying process).
A test tile to see how underglazes behave in hollows on greenware clay (not bis fired) applied in layers of Bluey greens applied with brush, sponge
and a home made brush of Lavender stalks (last years prunings).

I’m hoping no nasty colour surprises as raw underglaze change tones a bit as fired and glazed.
Next is the test tile for the bowl to see if a can mimic sand tide marks under water.

The Bird bath is in effect a large test tile to get that “watery vibe” for the
Merman Palace urns I’ve been promising to make (years delay with studio build fxxk ups and kiln dramas)
but still the project I wish to complete even if I have to fire off site in a big bugger kiln. by @taz_marsh
