Almost 2 years ago, I spent a few days in Kansas with the crew from Carter’s Big Island. These were some of my favorite moments.

We like it when they’re happy…

Some baby tarpon using their vestigial lungs - biological relics from their dinosaur ancestry - to get a little extra oxygen in a stagnant backwater. These fish can breathe air just like we do.

‘Artistic Islands’ is officially open to the public at Dublin Castle, running through March 2026.

This exhibition explores the shared stories of island nations through art — examining Ireland’s Blasket Islands alongside the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean. The works of Frank Walter and Maria Simonds-Gooding unify artists and cultures from distant shores through a shared interest in place, memory, and the deep past.

The show would not have happened without the vision and support of Dr. Barbara Paca — as well as The OPW; Dublin Castle; Joris Dockx; and all of our amazing collaborators in Antigua & County Kerry.

Bonefish will expose their backs and tails in only inches of water while they feed on crustaceans. The tide and light on this evening coincided well for a chance at capturing well-lit tails on this flat (if the fish decided they were willing to cooperate).

As the fish worked into camera range (only had 75mm to work with) I realized it would be hard to get closer than I already was undetected. Luckily I had a 2X teleconverter which I usually leave at home, and I threw it on to get a little more range before the light was insufficient.

These fish were so wary that even the sound of my shutter caused them to spook a few times (this camera is pretty loud). Nevertheless, I was fortunate to get a couple good frames where you can clearly see the tails of fish feeding happily with the incoming tide. The closer you look, the more fish you can see.
